Biography

Although not raised in a church-going family, gospel leader Kurt Carr took it upon himself to start attending services at age 13 and soon became active in his church's musical programs. Finding inspiration in albums by gospel greats Walter Hawkins, James Cleveland, and Andrae Crouch, Carr attended the University of Connecticut in his hometown of Hartford, graduating with a degree in fine arts and a newfound appreciation of classical music. He was mentored by the classically trained gospel legend Richard Smallwood, who broadened the young student's horizons to include elements of different musical styles in his compositions and whom Carr still refers to as his "godfather." In 1986, Carr joined with Reverend James Cleveland and his ensemble, acting as pianist and musical director until the reverend's death in 1991.

Carr released an album of his compositions and arrangements entitled Together on Light Records in 1991. Starting his own record label, Gospo Centric, in 1992, the energetic musical director led his group, the Kurt Carr Singers, through several albums of contemporary music thoroughly steeped in the traditional sound of gospel including 1994's Serious About It!, 1997's No One Else, and Awesome Wonder in 2000. As well as his own recordings and serving as creative director for the L. A.-based West Angeles Church of God In Christ, Carr has been an active promoter of the acts on his Gospo Centric label, including such industry heavy hitters as Trin-i-tee 5:7, Gospel Gangstas, and Kirk Franklin and the Family. ~ Zac Johnson., All Music Guide

Kurt Carr is an American gospel music composer and performer. While living in the city of Hartford, Connecticut he served as Minister of Music at The First Baptist Church of Hartford located at the time on Greenfield Street. Kurt credits Archbishop LeRoy Bailey as a positive influence in starting his professional gospel career, as Archbishop Bailey enabled Carr to perform his own music during church services.[citation needed]

Kurt Carr, born in the early 1960’s in Hartford, CT, is a stellar award winning gospel music artist and founder and leader of The Kurt Carr Singers.

Biography

He grew up in a family who believed in Jesus, but were not deeply involved in church. At the age of 13 Kurt found himself being drawn to the church more and more. He became an active member in the church’s music department. At the age of 17 he realized that he was being called to do something even higher with his life. After High School, Kurt was accepted into the University of Connecticut’s music program, studying classical music, where he earned his Fine Arts degree. From there he began to go further and further with his music.

Beginnings

Kurt was led to be Andrae Crouch’s piano accompanist for Crouch’s music ministry for one year. After playing there for a yr, new doors opened for Carr. Rev. James Cleveland hired Carr to be musical director and pianist for Rev. Cleveland’s ministry. He was employed there for 7 yrs until Rev. Cleveland died. Both of the positions helped him to go further in his music. Carr became director of The West Los Angeles C.O.G.I.C Choir, where he had the opportunity to work with both Gospel and Secular musical artists, such as Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Yolanda Adams, and Kirk Franklin. In 1989 while in Los Angeles, Carr formed a six member vocal ensemble Gospel singers group, called The Kurt Carr Singers.

Musical Career

Carr’s music is an interesting blend of traditional Gospel composition and vocals, elements of R &B, jazz, soul, blues, and the distinct modern harmonies and singing styles found in Urban Contemporary Gospel. The Kurt Carr Singers under Kurt Carr’s direction and musical influence have created six albums. Kurt Carr has won four stellar awards.
