Review

Et Sans is the project of Alexandre St-Onge and Roger Tellier-Craig of the bands Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Fly Pan Am, respectively. This is a very minimalist project that in places captures the familiar lo-fi essence of Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Fly Pan Am, while at the same capturing an aesthetic that is familiar in both the Chicago post-rock sound and Tortoise, specifically, but this is really only true in timbre, as their spacey and droning sound is quite organic and in places seems to reference a bit of sonic avant-garde of the '60s. Et Sans' L'Autre is a superb recording and one that really speaks a language of its own sonic vocabulary. The sound of droning electronics is subtly counterpointed by a barely audible bass guitar or perhaps baritone guitar motif that resonates throughout the fabric of this single-movement, long-form piece. The piece, overall, unfolds very slowly and breathes life with each passing note. Those who are familiar with the quieter offerings of post-rock will certainly enjoy this, but there's a bit of a Kranky Records feel to this recording, à la Windy and Carl and perhaps Fontanelle. All and all this is an excellent recording and one that certainly has its own language. Highly recommended. ~ Matt Borghi, All Music Guide
