Biography

The Spanish indie pop outfit La Buena Vida was formed in San Sebastian during the summer of 1988 by singer Irantzu Valencia, guitarists Mikel Aguirre and Javier Sanchez, bassist Pedro San Martin, keyboardist Borja Sanchez, and drummer Raul Sebastian. Inspired by a shared affection for classic pop ranging from the Beatles to the Smiths, the group proceeded to spend the next four years honing their soft, shimmering sound in relative seclusion, in that time composing over 100 songs; they finally signed to the fledgling Siesta label in 1992, soon issuing their debut EP Historia de un Verano. La Buena Vida's full-length debut followed in October 1993, and six months later the band resurfaced with the EP Mira a tu Alrededor. By the time of 1994's Los Mejores Momentos, La Buena Vida was among the best-selling acts on the Spanish indie scene, but after issuing the Magnesia EP in mid-1995, they dropped from sight for well over a year, finally resurfacing in the spring of 1997 with the Louis Philippe-produced Soidemersol. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Biography

The band's career can be divided into two stages. Initially, their music bore many similarities in sound and attitude with groups known as "twee pop", in particular those of the legendary UK label Sarah Records and of their countrymen Aventuras de Kirlian. They were also influenced by pop music of the late 1960s like Love, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Velvet Underground, Honeybus, Pic Nic and Vainica Doble[1], with touches of bossa nova and soul. They have also recognized the influence of French chanson (Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy). Their lyrics in this first stage reflect everyday life situations, as well as the feelings and concerns of average kids of their age (approximately 18) using a melancholical and evocative but natural tone.

Their second stage began with the LP Soidemersol (1997)[2]. Parting from their usual influences while keeping their own personality, they began to use complex orchestral arrangements in their songs. Their lyrics also began to mature, reflecting more complex sentiments and often being much more bitter and less innocent than before.

Today, La Buena Vida is one of the most respected and influential indie pop groups in Spain.
