Biography

An exceptionally well-regarded Spanish pop/rock band, La Oreja de Van Gogh is also one of the most commercially successful acts in the genre, with each of the band's albums selling approximately a million copies worldwide. Driven by electric guitar and keyboard, the music is easily enjoyable and accessible while, at the same time, smartly crafted and distinct, with lyrics that deal generally with the complexities of relationships. La Oreja de Van Gogh formed in 1996, after guitarist Pablo Benegas, bassist Álvaro Fuentes, keyboardist Xabi San Martín, and drummer Haritz Garde met at a local university. Vocalist Amaia Montero joined the band subsequently, following an invitation by Benegas, whom she'd met at a dinner party. From the outset, San Martín, Benegas, and Montero have served as the band's primary songwriters.

Signed by Sony Discos, La Oreja de Van Gogh debuted in 1998 with Dile al Sol, which spawned several hit singles -- including "El 28" and "Cuentame al Oido" -- and earned the band an Ondas Award for Best New Act. Their second album, 2000's El Viaje de Copperpot (2000), fared similarly; this time, however, singles like "Cuídate" and "La Playa" registered on an international level, charting in Latin America and the United States. Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida (2003) continued the band's success; eight singles from the album charted in Spain, four of them reaching number one, and the band continued to break into the Latin American markets, including the States. While La Oreja de Van Gogh were no strangers to success by this point, Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida proved to be their breakout album in many ways. For one, they toured heavily behind it, as documented on the 2004 concert DVD En Directo: Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacias la Dormida. Secondly, they won several awards in the wake of the album, including an Ondas Award for Best Album and an MTV Latin Award for Best Group. Finally, it was their first album to sell impressively in the Americas, with over 100,000 copies sold in the States alone.

La Oreja de Van Gogh commemorated their tenth anniversary with the release of Guapa in 2006. Their most dynamic album yet, with notably surging guitar and a more extensive use of keyboards, Guapa nonetheless measured up to their past successes; its first two singles, "Muñeca de Trapo" and "Dulce Locura," were chart-toppers in Spain, while the album itself reached number five on the Top Latin Albums chart in the States, the band's highest peak yet. Furthermore, Guapa won the band a Latin Grammy for Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocals. In December 2006, a special double-disc edition of the album, Más Guapa, was released in Spain, containing numerous unreleased tracks and demos. Amaia Montero left the group in 2007, hoping to launch a solo career, and La Oreja de Van Gogh found a replacement vocalist with Leire Martínez. The new lineup returned to the studio and emerged with their fifth album, 2008's A las Cinco en el Astoria, which quickly earned platinum status in Spain. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

La Oreja de Van Gogh (English: Van Gogh's Ear) is a Latin Grammy winning and Grammy nominated Spanish pop band from Donostia-San Sebastian. The name of the band references the famous post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh who cut off the lobe of his own ear. Their characteristically poetic songs (both lyrics and music) are written mainly by band members Pablo Benegas, Xabi San Martín and Amaia Montero. The themes of their songs usually include love, friendship, relationships. Since their debut, they have sold more than 6 million copies worldwide of their four albums. In November 2007, lead singer Amaia Montero announced that she would be leaving the group to begin a solo career.[1] Her replacement, Leire Martínez, was announced in July 2008, along with the band's first single "El Último Vals" from their album titled A las cinco en el Astoria which was released on September 2 2008. Leire was discovered on the Spanish reality show Factor X.[2]

History

With Amaia Montero

"Los Sin Nombre" (The Nameless Ones) was the original name of the band when it was formed by the four men of the group while in college : Xabi San Martín, Pablo Benegas, Álvaro Fuentes and Haritz Garde. They recorded some songs but they were not released. They met Amaia Montero and, after listening to her sing "Nothing Compares 2 U" (Sinéad O'Connor), she joined the group. They won a Rock Festival in San Sebastián under the name of La Oreja de Van Gogh and in 1998 recorded their first album Dile al sol (Tell the sun). They were successful and rose to fame in 2000 with the publication of El viaje de Copperpot (Copperpot's Journey, reference to Chester Copperpot in the movie "The Goonies"). Three years later, they published Lo que te conté mientras te hacías la dormida (What I told you while you were pretending to be asleep) and in 2006, they published Guapa (Beautiful).

With Leire Martínez

In 2007, Amaia Montero left the group and Xabi, Pablo, Álvaro and Haritz made an audition looking for a new vocalist. In July 2008 they presented Leire Martínez as the new vocalist and the new song "El Último Vals" as the first single of their new album A las cinco en el Astoria (At five o'clock in Astoria).
