Javier Vazquez had good reason to give his group the presumptuous title Salsa -- the band included leading lights like Chocolate on trumpet, Jose Madera on timbales, and Chito on vocals, plus Vazquez himself on piano. La Verdad (The Truth) features ten solid songs, with plenty of space for the solos by Vazquez and Madera's furious timbales. The band works themselves into a sweat for "Sabroso Como el Guarapo," with Chito leading the charge; the next up, "Crocante Habanero," is an angular, rhythmic tune with an excellent chorus. Though the group hardly needs any help from modern touches, Vazquez is heard occasionally on electric piano and (quite low in the mix) Vincent Bell on electric guitar. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
