Lady Johanna Gray oder Der Triumph der Religion
Lady Johanna Gray oder Der Triumph der Religion, a tragedy in blank verse by C. M. Wieland, first published in 1758. The alternative title was first included in the edition of 1762. The tragedy, in five acts, deals with the brief reign of Lady Jane Grey, beginning at the death of Edward VI. Lady Johanna accepts the crown with reluctance, and after the overthrow of Northumberland she faces death with stoical fortitude. The only emotional climax occurs in the fourth act, when she is offered her life if she will embrace Catholicism. Her relatives at first press her to do so, but she spurns life on such a condition. The play is based on the tragedy Lady Jane Grey (1715) by Nicholas Rowe (1674-1718).
