History
The Company was founded by Ray O'Rourke in 1978: it was originally based in East London and was known as R. O'Rourke & Son.[2]
R. O'Rourke established a comprehensive construction capability in 2001 when it bought Laing Construction from John Laing plc for £1: the name of the Company was changed to Laing O'Rourke.[3]
In 2004 the Company acquired Crown House Engineering, a mechanical & electrical engineering business.[4]
Laing O'Rourke went on to expand its operations in Australia in 2006 when it acquired Barclay Mowlem.[5]
In March 2009 Laing O'Rourke was found to be a subscriber to the Consulting Association, a firm which is currently being prosecuted in the UK for holding a secret database of construction workers details.[6]
Operations
The Company has offices in the UK, Ireland, Germany, India, Australia and United Arab Emirates and around 31,000 employees worldwide. The chairman and Chief Executive is Ray O’Rourke.
Major projects
Major projects involving the company have included the reconstruction of Ascot Racecourse completed in time for the 2006 race season.[7]
On 30 August 2006, as part of a joint venture with Mace and CH2M Hill, Laing O'Rourke were named "Delivery Partner for the London 2012 Olympics".[8] Property developer APH Capital Partners have enlisted the help of Laing O’Rourke as its preferred design and construct contractor to construct the Trilogy Tower which at 70 levels is set to become Brisbane’s second tallest building.[9]
