Biography

Chicago's Lair of the Minotaur was formed in spring of 2003 by former 7000 Dying Rats members Steven Rathbone (vocals/guitar) and Donald James Barraca, along with Pelican drummer Larry Herweg. Inspired by the vulgar, misanthropic, proto-black metal pioneered decades earlier by the likes of Venom and Hellhammer, then adding lyrics based on classic Hellenic mythology, the trio produced a six-song EP later that year and quickly found a home with Southern Lord Records. Their full-length debut, Carnage, arrived in mid-2004 and the three-song Cannibal Massacre EP followed a year later; then a second, even more potent full-length named The Ultimate Destroyer was released in early 2006. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide

History

Lair Of The Minotaur was formed by vocalist/guitarist Steven Rathbone in 2003 due to his other band, 7000 Dying Rats, becoming solely a studio project, giving up playing live. He enlisted fellow 7000 Dying Rats bandmate Donald James Barraca on bass and long-time friend Larry Herweg as drummer (of post-metal band Pelican). Wasting no time, Lair Of The Minotaur recorded their self-produced 6-track debut EP in 2003, eventually finding its way into the hands of Southern Lord Records. Immediately impressed, Southern Lord signed up LotM, releasing debut full-length Carnage in 2004, and the follow-up, The Ultimate Destroyer, released in 2006. In between Carnage and The Ultimate Destroyer, the second EP, Cannibal Massacre, was released in 2005, also under Southern Lord Records.[citation needed]

Other

Lair of the Minotaur also has the dubious honor of having a burger named after them at Chicago's famed Kuma's Corner, frequently cited as home of the best burgers in the city. The burger, which features caramelized onions, pancetta, brie and bourbon-soaked pears, is one of the most popular and unique items on the menu.
