Land, as a political term, denotes the separate components of the Weimar Republic 1919-33, the Federal Republic since 1949, and the territories of the fomer German Democratic Republic (see Deutsche Demokratische Republik) 1949-52, and again after the unification of Germany; see Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
