Geography Dictionary:

land-locked state

A nation with no access to the sea. There are twenty-six land-locked states ranging in size from the tiny Vatican City to Mongolia. One important preoccupation of a land-locked state is access to the sea. This may be achieved along a river like the Danube, by the creation of a corridor, or simply by negotiating a right of passage through a maritime neighbour.
