Corporate history

Originally founded in 1985 as LAN Systems, the company’s software product assets were acquired by Intel in 1991, forming Intel’s LANDesk division.[3] In 2002, LANDesk Software became a standalone company with headquarters near Salt Lake City, Utah.[4] The company's software is used worldwide.[5] In 2006, Avocent purchased the company for $416 million. [6]. In August 2008 Avocent also acquired Touchpaper, ITSM vendor to merge within LANDesk division.

LANDesk sells directly and through partners worldwide and has regional offices and development centers in Brazil, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Britain. The division has employees in 18 countries.

LANDesk software is used to manage over 250 million desktops, servers and mobile devices.[7]

LANDesk pioneered the desktop management category back in 1993. That same year, IDC named LANDesk the category leader. [8] In addition, LANDesk has continued to lead the systems configuration space, pioneering virtual IT technology in 1999, revolutionizing large-packet distribution with LANDesk Targeted Multicast technologyX2. LANDesk’s software is used to manage devices running Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems.

In 2006, LANDesk added process management technologies to its product line and began integrating the systems, security and process management markets. LANDesk also extended into the consolidated service desk market with LANDesk Service Desk.

The company’s products have asset inventory/discovery, security vulnerability detection and remediation, software distribution, IT compliance reporting, patch management, software license management, security policy enforcement, and endpoint device power consumption management.
