During the 18th and 19th centuries Paris was considered to be the social, intellectual, and cultural center of the world. One could cynically say this was also the heyday of the French language, when conversation was elevated to an art form in the salons, and the Académie Française was a literary force to be reckoned with. But no matter how many English words creep into their everyday vocabulary, Parisians are still justifiably proud of their language, mastering its ambiguities and nuances to show off their quick wit or subtly poke fun at others with a play on words. Making an effort to speak the language is a show of respect, no matter how badly you’ve mangled the pronunciation of the plat du jour.
