History

The name "Lanner" comes from the Cornish "Lannarth", which means "a clearing".[2] The village is a former tin and copper mining parish which grew rapidly in the 19th century, but has been recorded as far back as 1542, and with settlement traces back to the Bronze Age.[4]

The foundation stone of the Anglican chapel in Lanner was laid on 20 April 1839 [5]

Michael Loam erected his first man engine at Tresavean mine here in 1842. The mine was, in its heyday, one of the most productive copper mines in Cornwall [6] [7], with its own horse-drawn tramway [8]

Geography

The village sits in a valley, between Carn Marth to the north, Lanner Hill to the west, and Tresavean Hill to the south. It is laid out in a linear east-west fashion along the A393 which runs from Redruth to Falmouth. A stream runs under the main road and a number of other streams are found throughout the village.

As the village slopes down from west to east, the western part of the village is known as Lanner Hill and the eastern part is known as Lanner Moor.

Music

The village is well known for the "Lanner and District Silver Band" which is one of the top brass bands in Cornwall.[citation needed] The American countertenor Richard Jose was born in Lanner in 1862: he emigrated to the United States and died in 1941. Electronic musician Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) grew up in Lanner.
