Review

Jandek's third album finds him in a more rhythmic mood -- pounding out as many possible variations of the single dissonant chord his guitar will allow him to play. "Your Condition" and "Until Then" reveal his newly found interest in what the Feelies might refer to as "crazy rhythms," while "John Came" is played "like" a blues song, minus two essential chords. Jandek's haunting voice is joined on several tracks by an echo-laden harmonica, played very high pitched, yet in an uncharacteristically controlled manner. This disc, along with Jandek's other work, is not very accessible or easy to find music, and is recommended for musical spelunkers willing to explore caverns long since forgotten by more mainstream listeners. As the Later On title suggests, this album is strictly a lonely person's night-time music -- to be played only in the company of candlelight and shifting shadows. ~ Brian Flota, All Music Guide
