Biography

Long Island pop-punk/post-hardcore hybridists Latterman first got together around 2001, and Turn Up the Punk, We'll Be Singing was self-released by the band a year later. After a hiatus of a year or so Phil Douglas (guitar/vocals), Matt Cannino (bass/vocals), Mike Campbell (guitar), and Pat Schramm (drums) reconvened around new songs they'd written. They signed to North Carolina indie Deep Elm, who released the band's second effort, No Matter Where We Go, in August 2005. (The label also reissued Turn Up the Punk around the same time.) In true D.I.Y. fashion, Latterman's tour in support of their new album included gigs in apartments and kids' basements across the U.S., the U.K., and Europe. The band's rocking third album, ...We Are Still Alive, appeared in late summer 2006; Brian Crozier had also replaced Campbell on guitar by this time. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

Latterman was a four-piece punk rock band from Huntington, New York. They played a style of melodic punk rock with shouted dual-vocals by Phil Douglas and Matt Canino, and their songs often contain political and/or socially-conscious lyrics. The band has been compared to the likes of Against Me!, The Lawrence Arms, Hot Water Music and Fifth Hour Hero.

On October 18, 2007, music website Punknews.org reported that the band has officially broken up.[1] The band issued a statement which indicated a number of reasons for the split, including turmoil with their label and misinterpretation of the band's message and intentions.

Members have since gone on to play in bands including Shorebirds, Iron Chic, Bridge and Tunnel, RVIVR, Laura Stevenson and The Cans, and The Brass.

Controversy

A considerable amount of controversy occurred when Latterman agreed to perform at the 15th Annual Groezrock Festival [1]. While numerous popular punk and indie rock bands performed, some of which had performed with Latterman before, it was revealed that among the festival's sponsors was multinational corporation PepsiCo Inc., producer of Pepsi soda and Pepsi products. PepsiCo has received considerable attention for investing in regimes that have committed atrocities against dissidents, namely Burma. [http://totalitarian-oil.blogspot.com/2006/04/pepsi-boycott-1991-1997.html The criticism was made that playing a festival sponsored by Pepsi conflicted with the bands message and was a show of hypocrisy. Latterman to date has made no formal statement on the festival.
