Review

The Latin pop and rock en español fields are full of talented artists who would probably be huge in the English-language market if they didn't sing in Spanish exclusively. Some non-Spanish-speaking listeners don't mind listening to lyrics they don't understand -- the beat and the melody are enough for them -- but many others insist on understanding every word that is coming out of an artist's mouth. Thus, Latin stars usually don't cross over to English-speaking audiences until they start singing in English, which is what Shakira does on 2001's Laundry Service. "Whenever, Wherever," this album's infectious lead single, is to Shakira what "Livin' la Vida Loca" was to Ricky Martin: the major hit that brought her to English-speaking audiences in a big way. For Shakira, singing and writing in mostly English was no doubt a challenge -- Spanish, after all, is the Colombian star's primary language. But it's a challenge that she handles impressively well. Shakira, it turns out, sings quite convincingly in English -- and her creativity is at a high level on melodic, hooky pop/rock like "Rules" and "Ready for the Good Times." Like Shakira's Spanish-language albums, this self-produced CD is enjoyably eclectic; she successfully combines pop/rock with everything from tango on "Objection" and Andean music on "Whenever, Wherever" to Middle Eastern music on "Eyes Like Yours" (which contains lyrics by Gloria Estefan and is an English translation of Shakira's late-'90s smash, "Ojos Así"). While nine of Laundry Service's 13 tracks are in English, four are in Spanish (including Spanish translations of "Whenever, Wherever" and "Objection"). And by including these four tracks, Shakira seems to be assuring her Spanish-speaking fans that she hasn't abandoned them. Dónde Están los Ladrones? remains Shakira's most essential album, but Laundry Service is an excellent English-language debut for the South American vocalist. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Laundry Service (Servicio De Lavandería in Spanish-speaking territories) is the debut English breakthrough studio album by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira, released on November 13, 2001 by Epic Records. All the songs on the album except Eyes Like Yours (which is a translation of Shakira’s trademark Ojos Así) are original and were fully or partly composed by Shakira. It also contains four songs in Spanish. Shakira recorded this album during almost two years in Uruguay and the Bahamas.

Musically the album is a fusion of many different genres and cultures. Every song, except of another language versions, is composed in completely different style. The title "Laundry Service" means when people wash all the mud from their body, the same thing can be said for the soul, the songs are like a soap for washing off negative energy, calling the album as the soul cleaner. Heavily influenced by South American culture, britpop and American rock and roll, the album gained generally positive reviews despite of some negative calls from Latin fans for seemingly abandoning her folk and rock roots in favor of contemporary American pop music. This album won dozens of awards worldwide, including the Latin Grammy Award in the category of Best Short Form Music Video.

The album reached the top three of the charts in both the United States and United Kingdom (after the re-release, it reached #2 in UK). Whenever, Wherever (and its Spanish counterpart Suerte), the first single from the album, was first heard in Colombia and the United States in late August 2001 and immediately became number one. Subsequently, the single was climbing the tops of charts in more than 30 countries during the period of over 6 months, eventually becoming the best selling single of 2002 worldwide. Shakira started the promotion in Colombia and Spain in October 2001 and then returned to the US for the American album release (November 13, 2001). There are also another three international singles Underneath Your Clothes (U.S. #9), Objection (Tango) and The One, that finally helped to recognize Shakira as a mainstream artist. Freddy DeMann, who worked with Michael Jackson, Madonna and Alanis Morissette, handled the management of that era of Shakira’s career and the promotion. For the first time she appeared in a number of American prime-time TV shows and open-air concerts and continued the promotion in Europe, South America and Asia up to July 2002.

Shakira supported the album with the "Tour of the Mongoose" with the worldwide audience of over 1.2 million people. Laundry Service is Shakira's best selling album to date and has sold more than 13 million copies worldwide,[1][2] becoming the best-selling album by a Latin American artist ever.

Production history

After the success of the ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? and MTV Unplugged albums, Shakira decided to begin working on a crossover album to break into the English market in 2000. Laundry Service was originally designed to include older songs by advice of Gloria Estefan, the wife of the executive producer of the album Emilio Estefan, Jr.. However, Shakira later decided against using translations of older songs for the album and worked for over a year on new material for the album.

Just months after its announcement, the album was mainly produced by Shakira herself, Tim Mitchell and Lester Mendez who produced a bulk of tracks on the album. Shakira recorded the album in in Miami, Florida and Nassau, Bahamas at the Compass Point Studios. She worked with several other notable producers: Glen Ballard and Luis F. Ochoa.

The album has yielded eight singles: "Whenever, Wherever", "Suerte (Whenever, Wherever)", "Te Dejo Madrid", "Underneath Your Clothes", "Objection (Tango)", "Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango)", "The One", and "Que Me Quedes Tú". "Fool" was released as a single only in Brazil, and "Poem To A Horse" which was released as the main-single from her 2004 tour album Live & Off the Record.

Critical and commercial reception

Some critics criticized the effectiveness of Shakira's lyrics, claiming that her English skills were too weak for her to write in that language, but nearly all agreed on her unique poetic imagery.[citation needed]. Most notably, Ernesto Lechner of Rolling Stone magazine described the album:

"On the spanish-language albums that elevated her to Latin-rock-goddess status, Shakira Mebarak sounded playful, bohemian and rebellious. On her English-language debut, she sounds downright silly, but the blame is not entirely hers. Surrounded by a battalion of producers and songwriters, the twenty-four-year-old yodeling diva can't quite overcome the pedestrian nature of most of the material at hand, the bulk of which she co-wrote. Equally misdirected are her efforts to spice things up with obvious touches of Latin American folklore (the opening "Objection" sounds like a cross between "Livin' la Vida Loca" and an Astor Piazzolla tango). Shakira's voice is a wild and beautiful instrument, and she's capable of delivering scorching moments of musical passion, as her live performances have amply demonstrated. But if you take away the Zeppelin-esque crunch of the Glen Ballard-penned ballad "The One" and the sinuous chants of the Lebanese-flavored "Eyes Like Yours," you'll see that, for now, at least, Shakira's magic is lost in translation".[3]

Other critics were more positive. Alex Henderson from All Music Guide compares Shakira's lead single with the Ricky Martin's trademark song and mentioned that "Dónde Están Los Ladrones? remains Shakira's most essential album, but Laundry Service is an excellent English-language debut for the South American vocalist".[4]

Laundry Service was released in the United States on November 13, 2001. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 album chart with first week sales of over 202,000, exceeding expectations by a wide margin.[5] The album eventually spent six months in the top twenty on the chart, fueled by the success of its two lead singles. It was eventually certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA in June 2002 making it one of the biggest selling albums of the year.

In Australia, the album was certified gold for shipments exceeding 35,000 units. It has since been certified five times platinum in Australia with sales of over 350,000. It debuted at number two in the UK Albums Chart and has since been certified double platinum with sales of over 697,000 copies. In Portugal the album reached number one for two months and was eventually certified 4x Platinum (160,000 copies) and it was on the top 30 over than 70 consecutive weeks. It established the record for the best selling album in Turkey.

The album debuted high on charts due to the success of the lead single "Whenever, Wherever" that reached the top ten in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In Australia and the UK it reached number one and number two respectively. It remained on the Australian Singles Charts for six consecutive weeks and became the second best-selling single of the year. In the UK it reached number two, and ended the year as the eighth best-selling single and was certified gold for sales of over 554,754.

Laundry Service was eventually one of the biggest selling albums of 2002, and was certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA in June 2002. The album reached number one in Australia, Austria, Canada, Mexico, Portugal, New Zealand, Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. The album's success and its singles helped to establish Shakira's musical presence in the mainstream North American market.

In 2007, the album was included at number 172 on the list of the "Definitive 200" albums of all time developed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers.[6]

Other versions

The album was released in Latin America as Servicio de Lavandería (the Spanish translation of the title), with the same tracks, but in a different order. Thus, "Objection (Tango)" was born, a song that documents Shakira's anger at a relationship in which her lover is unfaithful. It was Shakira's first song composed in English. All the songs on album are original, with the exception of "Eyes Like Yours", which is a translation of Shakira's Arabic-tinged 1999 worldwide hit Ojos Así. Although it is an English album, it did contain four Spanish tracks.

In 2002, Sony BMG stated the re-release of the album which was titled Laundry Service: Washed & Dried. It include three additional bonus tracks and a bonus DVD which include the "Objection (Tango)" performance from the MTV Video Music Awards, Behind-the-Scenes of the MTV's Making the Video and the music video.
