Biography

Singer/songwriter Laura Marling was only 16 years old when she emerged on the British indie scene in 2007 thanks to a handful of infectious singles made available on her MySpace profile. Endowed with a husky voice, an acoustic guitar, and a gift for building quirky, hooky folk songs (characteristics that would have the artist compared favorably to artists like Lily Allen, Regina Spektor, and Martha Wainwright), Marling quickly made a name for herself throughout England thanks to a heavy touring schedule and a few high-profile gigs, not the least of which included an appearance at the 2006 City Showcase: Spotlight London and as the opening act for Jamie T. Still without a label one year later, her debut EP, My Manic and I, was nonetheless slated for independent release in the late fall of 2007. This status didn't last for long however, because in early 2008, signed to Virgin, Marling issued Alas I Cannot Swim, which also came as part of a multimedia "Songbox" package. ~ Margaret RegesMySpace profile. Laura Beatrice Marling (born 1 February 1990), is a folk-pop, singer-songwriter from Hampshire, England. Marling has toured with a number of well-known indie artists in the UK and beyond including Adam Green[1] and Jamie T, who invited her on tour with him in 2006 after he attended her second-ever gig.

She performed at the 2007 O2 Wireless Festival and also performed at the first Underage Festival in August 2007 at Victoria Park, East London. Her television appearances include The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson where she performed the song "Ghosts" and Later with Jools Holland where she performed the song "New Romantic".

Her debut single "Ghosts" came out on WayOutWest Records, with subsequent singles out on Virgin Records. Her debut album Alas, I Cannot Swim was released on 4 February 2008[2] and was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Prize.[3] She released "Night Terror", the third and final single from her album, on 27 October 2008. Her 6-date Night Terror tour started in November 2008.[4]

Marling is a former member of the band Noah and the Whale[5] and performs on their debut album Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down from which the hit "5 Years Time" was taken. Charlie Fink, lead singer of Noah and the Whale, produced Marling's album.

She appeared on The Rakes track "Suspicious Eyes", from the band's second album Ten New Messages and Mystery Jets single "Young Love" released 10 March, 2008[6] from their second album.

In 2008 she appeared with her sister on the Russell Brand Radio 2 show.

She was once denied access to one of her own performances for being underage.[7] She instead chose to perform on the street.[8]

London-based singer/songwriter Beans On Toast has a song about Marling. 'I Fancy Laura Marling' is on his debut album 'Standing On A Chair'.

A new album is due for release in March 2010 with Ethan Johns producing. The first single, Christmas song "Goodbye England (Covered in Snow)," will be released in the UK on December 14th.[9]
