Science and national security are brought together at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The facility directs its science and engineering work toward the goal of making sure US nuclear weapons are safe, secure, and reliable. LLNL also conducts research in such areas as national security, basic science and advanced technology, bioscience and biotechnology, and energy and the environment. Part of the National Nuclear Security Administration of the US Department of Energy, LLNL was founded at the height of the Cold War in 1952 as a companion to Los Alamos National Laboratory.
