(b Lyon, ?c. 1580; d Lyon, 1637). French painter. He was in Rome in 1600, where he was cited in a lawsuit against Caravaggio; he was a member of the city's Accademia di S Luca. Although no Roman works by him have been identified, early sources place him in the circle of Giovanni Lanfranco and also describe him as a pupil of Palma Giovane, which suggests that he may have spent some time in Venice. He returned to Lyon in 1610, and in that year was appointed master of the painters' guild, an office he filled several times until 1629. He was soon much in demand, producing religious works for monastic establishments in and around Lyon. In 1621 he painted an Ecstasy of St Teresa (Lyon, Mus. B.-A.), probably for a Carmelite house, and an Entombment (Grenoble, St Andr?) that includes portraits of Fran?ois, Duc de Lesdigui?res, and his wife.
