Bonnet rouge, Le. The red cap was adopted as a sign of revolutionary allegiance by many French men and women from 1789 and became an official emblem of the Revolution in August 1792. It has its origin in the bonnet phrygien, a Roman symbol of liberty, but also in the red caps worn by convicts. In Brittany, ‘les Bonnets rouges’ was the name taken by the participants in the great peasant rising of 1675.
