Le Cartel

Cartel, Le. Name of a loose association formed in 1927 of four Paris theatres run by Jouvet, Baty, Dullin, and the Pitoëffs. They published a manifesto expressing a common policy of resisting crude commercialism and improving the quality of theatre production. Their influence was dominant throughout the 1930s [see Theatres and Audiences, 2].
