Plot
In an excellent rendering of the changing issues and events that finally led to a 1980 referendum not to separate Quebec from the rest of Canada, director Hugues Mignault has skillfully portrayed the leading figures on each side of the debate: Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, former cabinet minister Jean Chretien and others against the independence of Quebec -- and Quebec Premier Rene Lesvesque and long-time separatist Pierre Bourgault fighting for independence. Events that helped to determine the outcome of the battle are logically outlined and explored -- for example, after non-separatist Quebec women were denigrated by a provincial politician, they took up the cause of fighting independence with a vengeance. The film is interesting going for those who care about broadening their knowledge of Canadian history, or for anyone following the Quebec issue.~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
