Review

In the '80s and '90s, Paris became more and more of a hotbed of Middle Eastern music. The city had a sizable population of Middle Eastern immigrants, and quite a few singers and musicians of Middle Eastern descent lived and recorded there. One of them was Fawzy Al-Aiedy, who grew up in Iraq but moved to Paris when he was in his early 20s. The title, Le Paris Bagdad, acknowledges the singer's French citizenship as well as his Iraqi upbringing. This is a very traditional recording -- selections like "Zourouni," "Naima" and "Dana Dina" find Al-Aiedy putting music to traditional Iraqi or Egyptian texts. Al-Aiedy is not only an expressive and convincing vocalist; he's also a solid oud player. Al-Aiedy, who was 48 when this CD was recorded, demonstrates his mastery of the oud (an Arabic lute) on the instrumental, "Moudif." Buda thoughtfully provides a lyric sheet in French and English, as well as Arabic. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
