Le Roi se meurt

Le Roi se meurt (English Exit the King) is an absurdist drama by Eugene Ionesco that premiered in 1962. Berenger, the main character from his more well-known play, Rhinoceros, also appears here as King Berenger the First. The play centers around Berenger's rule in an unnamed country, which he has incompetently managed into utter disarray, and his emotions about his mortality. He refuses to relinquish the power he wields despite being informed of his own approaching death. The play was filmed for television in 1978 in a production directed by Yves-André Hubert and again in 2006.

A production of Exit the King was mounted by Company B (Sydney) in 2007 with Geoffrey Rush as King Berenger and direction by Neil Armfield. The production also formed part of the 2007 Malthouse Theatre season in Melbourne and was one of the plays in the VCE curriculum drama students could choose to analyse.
