1. A role conferred on the basis of personal characteristics, experience, or through tradition by virtue of the position a person occupies in a group (e.g. team captain or coach). A leader generally takes a major role in making group decisions, motivating the group, and effecting group actions. See also leadership behaviour.
2. An individual or team occupying first position in a sports event.
