Leander

Leander (Leandros), youth of Abȳdus (on the Asiatic side of the Hellespont) who, according to legend, was in love with Hero, the beautiful priestess of Aphroditē at Sestus on the opposite (Greek) shore. Leander used to swim across to Hero every night, his course guided by a light in a tower. One stormy night the light was extinguished and Leander was drowned. When his body was washed up Hero, in despair, threw herself into the sea. See MUSAEUS 2.
