Biography

Not to be confused with the Leatherface punks from England, New Jersey's Leathermouth is the creation of Frank Iero (rhythm guitarist for emo-rockers My Chemical Romance) and his friend Rob Hughes. The two formed the hardcore group in 2007, after passing too much time without an outlet to vocalize their frustrations with society and the world around them. Iero especially looked to the side project as a way to exorcise all the rage he could not directly deal with in his primary band. Rumors of Leathermouth had been flying around for a bit before some rough demos surfaced online that featured the raw and confrontational punk that would be their specialty. Iero handled vocals, Hughes took guitar, and various friends rounded out Leathermouth's ranks. The group toured a bit in the fall of 2008 as openers for Reggie and the Full Effect before officially announcing in October that they had inked a deal with California's Epitaph Records. Leathermouth's debut full-length, XO, appeared in late January 2009, featuring throat-shredding hardcore influenced by Black Flag and Ink & Dagger that tackled subjects like school shootings, overmedicated kids, and crooked politicians. Sporadic tour dates followed the record's release in between Iero's commitments to My Chemical Romance. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

History

Leathermouth formed in 2007 by some friends of My Chemical Romance's rhythm guitarist Frank Iero.[1] Iero heard a few demo tracks from the band, and wanted to sign the band to his own independent label. It was not until the previous lead singer had failed to write any lyrics that Iero became a member.[5] As a member of Leathermouth, this is the first project where he contributes lyrics and lead vocals.[5] Iero uses the project as a way to vent about the way he sees the world[1] and also to let out his personal struggles with depression and anxiety.[6] Leathermouth played their first shows in the summer of 2008 alongside Warship for the Fall 2008 Reggie and the Full Effect "Farewell Tour".[7] Iero hopes to tour with Leathermouth when he is not working with My Chemical Romance.[8]

In October 2008, Leathermouth signed to Epitaph Records[9] as opposed to Frank Iero's label as originally planned. Iero thought that it would be difficult to promote the album himself, if released through his own label, with his current obligations to My Chemical Romance and the other bands signed to his label. Epitaph Records president, Brett Gurewitz, was impressed with the band's "intensity and songwriting of the music."[10] Leathermouth released their first studio album on January 27, 2009 through Epitaph entitled XO.[4] Although the album did not chart on the Billboard 200, it did reach #21 on the Top Heatseekers chart.[11]
