It is situated between the Quarry Hill and Leeds City Markets areas of Leeds city centre. It can be accessed from York Street, Dyer Street and the adjoining coach station.

The bus station was opened in 1938 and was previously known as Leeds Central bus station. It was refurbished in 1964 and rebuilt in 1996 when National Express moved its coach operations to the site.

The interior of Leeds City bus station

There are 26 stands and the main operators are First Leeds, Arriva Yorkshire, Yorkshire Coastliner, National Express and Harrogate & District.

Most internal city bus (First Leeds) services the city centre roads; mainly on the public transport box (The Headrow, Park Row (Leeds), Vicar Lane and Boar Lane). Nearly all buses from the bus station are to destinations out of the city, such as Ripon, Scarborough, Hull, Pontefract, Barnsley, Huddersfield, Halifax and Skipton.

Criticism

A common criticism of the bus station is that it is situated too far away from the railway station, meaning Leeds lacks a central transport interchange.[citation needed] These criticisms were partly answered in 2005 by the building of a small bus interchange at the railway station, which is linked to the bus station by a Freecitybus zero-fare bus service.[citation needed]
