History

Leland's mother is La Fonda Sue Darnall (née Honeycutt). When Leland was two years old, his father Duane "Dog" Chapman better known as Dog the Bounty Hunter went to prison. While his father was incarcerated, Leland's parents divorced. He didn't see his father again until he was 8 years old when Dog gained visitation rights to see Duane Lee and Leland. It took a very long time for Leland and Duane Lee to trust and to bond with him. Leland thought his step-dad was his real dad.

Leland lived in Pampa Texas in his early years, but during his teen years moved to Colorado Springs. He was involved in the gang culture during his childhood. His father moved his family to Hawaii in the early 1990s. Leland's grandparents, Barbara and Wesley Chapman, later joined the family and opened up a bail bonds office on the Big Island of Hawaii. Leland graduated high school in 1993/1994. Leland was arrested at age 17 for mugging a tourist. When Leland was 17 years old he began to train as a boxer, kick boxer, and extreme fighter. Leland has won many competitions with the help of local boxer Sonny. At age 21, Leland started his own bail bonds company, "Da Kine Bail Bonds," in Kona, Hawaii after earning his bail bonds license. Leland works in the family run bail bonds business with his works with his older brother Duane Lee Chapman

Leland has recently embarked on a new business venture with two of his brothers, Duane Lee Chapman and Wesley Chapman. Together they have formed Chapbros Media and have launched an iPhone, iPod touch and website talent contest application called Show Off.

Arrest

On September 14, 2006, Leland Chapman, Duane "Dog" Chapman, and Tim Chapman were arrested in Hawaii on charges concerning their involvement in the arrest of fugitive Andrew Luster.

On September 15, 2006, Leland Chapman and Tim Chapman were released on $100,000 bail, while Duane was released on a $300,000 bail. All three bounty hunters were ordered to house arrest, had to wear an electronic tracking device and were ordered to give up their passports. At the end of their sentence, the tracking devices were removed and they were given permission to change their bail requirements so they could continue to run their bail bonds business.

On February 16, 2007, the Second District Court in Guadalajara denied a request for an injunction preventing extradition. The court ruled that Duane, Leland and Tim should face trial on one count of "deprivation of liberty" in violation of the country's anti-bounty hunting statutes.

Mexico reviewed Dog's case to see if they did have grounds to extradite him on a misdemeanor. There were multiple legal defense funds set up for Duane, Leland and Tim, including one set up by Tanja "Doe," a victim of Andrew Luster.

On August 1, 2007, all charges against the three bounty hunters were dropped. That October, the Chapmans were told that they would not be extradited to Mexico by American authorities.
