Len Duvall OBE is a Labour Party politician, member of the London Assembly and a former chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority.[1]
Duvall is a former councillor and leader of the London Borough of Greenwich[citation needed]. He was one of the founders of the New Local Government Network[citation needed] and was awarded the OBE in 1998. He was first elected as an AM in 2000[citation needed], and retained his Greenwich and Lewisham seat in the 2004 election. He is chair of the Labour Group on the London Assembly and of London Labour Party.
He is also a Non-Executive Director of Tilfen Land, a property company which is active in his constituency[citation needed].
Just prior to the May 2008 Mayoral election in London, this statement was issued by Len Duvall in response to Andrew Gilligan Evening Standard column 30 April 2008[Need quotation on talk to verify]
Twenty nine years ago, in 1979, at the age of 17, Mr Duvall pleaded guilty and was convicted at Woolwich magistrates' court of carrying an offensive weapon - a piece of wood. He was fined and given a conditional discharge (12 months). Mr Duvall is now aged 47. Mr Duvall declared the conviction before being appointed Chair of the MPA, and has always declared it (when necessary) before taking public office. The nature of the conviction was not an obstacle to him being appointed to the post. Since the 1980s Mr Duvall has worked tirelessly to promote community safety in London, serving as leader of Greenwich Council and as a member of Greenwich police consultative group in the late 80s. In 1998 he was awarded an OBE for his contribution to London local government.[Need quotation on talk to verify]
