Levante, also referred to as El Levante (Spanish), is a name sometimes used to refer to the eastern Mediterranean coastal region of the Iberian Peninsula, usually by people not native to that area. It includes the Valencian Community, Murcia, Catalonia, Almería, the eastern part of Castile-La Mancha (Albacete and Cuenca) and the southern part of Aragon. It roughly corresponds to the NUTS ES5 area.
More modernly, references in Spain to Levante usually tend to include only Valencian Community and Murcia.
It's scarcely used in the Valencian Community, as "Levante" means "eastern" and thus makes sense only from the perspective of those who live to the west of the Valencian Community. As a consequence, it's associated with centralist positions and considered to ignore Valencian identity.
