Always much more than a trumpeter, Jeff Beal on his debut as a leader plays trumpet, piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn, keyboards and contributed all eight of the compositions. Mixing acoustic and electric instruments and the post-bop tradition with aspects of fusion and funk, the music on this set is quite unclassifiable. Beal is joined by guitarist Jay Azzolina, bassist Ned Mann, drummer Larry Aberman on five of the numbers (two of which also include saxophonist David Mann), while three songs are overdubbed showcases for Beal's keyboards, drum programming and horns, and Joan Beal sings "Skylight." An impressive beginning for the potentially significant musician. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
