One of the powerful tribes of northern India at the time of the Buddha Śākyamuni who formed part of the Vṛji (Pāli, Vajji) confederacy with the Mallas and the Videhas (see also Vṛjiputraka). The capital was located at Vaiśālī. Unlike many of the contemporary states in ancient India, the Licchavis had adopted a republican form of government which was praised by the Buddha and may have partly inspired the structure and organization of the Saṃgha.
