Lifehouse

Rock group

With their very first album, No Name Face, released by Dream Works in 2000, Lifehouse established themselves as a major modern rock band. The album hit the top of the charts and went double-platinum almost at once, and a single from the album, "Hanging by a Moment," became the most-played song on the radio in 2001.

Lifehouse was started in Los Angeles in 1996 by lead singer and songwriter Jason Wade, then in his mid-teens. Wade had moved a lot as a child, starting out in Camarillo, California, and moving with his parents to various points in Asia, including Japan and Thailand, before heading back to the United States to settle in Portland, Oregon. Stability was short-lived, however, and when his parents divorced, he moved yet again, this time with his mother to Seattle, Washington. It was there, while in junior high school, that Wade began to write and play music. When he was 15, he and his mother relocated a final time, to Los Angeles.

In Los Angeles, Wade met bass player Sergio Andrade and drummer Rick Woolstenhulme, and they played together as Blyss. Andrade had emigrated as a child from Guatemala City, and Woostenhulme, from rural Arizona, was in Los Angeles to study at the

Los Angeles Music Academy. The trio later changed its name to Lifehouse.

After playing for several years in small venues in the Los Angeles area, Lifehouse were signed to the DreamWorks label in 2000. Their first album, No Name Face, was released by DreamWorks in October of that year. It was an instant hit, with the single "Hanging by a Moment" getting more radio airtime than any other song in 2001.

Wade and his bandmates had only just hit their 20s when their first album was released. The album showcased Wade’s soulful singing and pensive lyrics, backed by electric guitar and drums. Deceptively simple, the album’s music reflects a maturity unusual for such an early effort. The theme of searching is highlighted in the album’s tracks, with the tunes "Unknown," ‘Trying," and "Only One" reflecting a quest for spiritual and personal fulfillment.

Although the music of Lifehouse is uplifting and at times inspirational, the band members do not identify themselves as Christian musicians. Two members of the band are Christian, and they originally met at a non-denominational church in Los Angeles. "My music is spiritually based, but we don’t want to be labeled as a ‘Christian band,’" Wade told Rolling Stone, as quoted in Campus Life magazine, "because all of a sudden people’s walls come up and they won’t listen to your music and what you have to say."

The album was produced by Ron Aniello and mixed by Brendan O’Brien, a music-industry veteran who had also worked on the recordings of Pearl Jam, U2, and Stone Temple Pilots. All Music Guide’s Liana Jonas praised O’Brien’s choice to make Wade’s singing the focus of the album by making sure that the instrumentation stayed at the back of the mix. Jonas called it "an intelligent musical formula sorely missed in much music of the early 21st century."

No Name Face shot to the number-six position on Billboard’s Top 200 chart and became a platinum record twice over. The single from the album, "Hanging by a Moment," hit the number-one position on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and number two on the Hot 100 chart. The band hit the road, touring with Pearl Jam, Fuel, Matchbox Twenty, and other rock stars, before recording its second album in 2001.

Lifehouse’s next album, Stanley Climbfall, was recorded by the band in the spring and summer months of 2002, and it was released on the DreamWorks label in the summer of 2002. Wade was 22 at the time of this release. This album features, in addition to the original trio, Rick Woolstenhulme’s younger brother, Sean Woolstenhulme, on guitar. The album was named to reflect the idea of taking risks and the inevitable ups and downs that result. The words "stand," "climb," and "fall," were combined to create a character named Stanley Climbfall.

"Spin" was the cut from Stanley Cimbfall that was chosen for the most radio play. Featuring the lyric "And the world keeps spinning round/My world’s upside down, and I wouldn’t change a thing," the song, noted the band’s website, might as well describe the band’s rapid rise to success. Again mixed by O’Brien and produced by Aniello, the album’s songs represent a shift from the yearning of the first album, reflecting the deeper confidence that comes with success. As Wade explained on the band’s website, "It’s a very physical record. It’s about moving forward. No Name Face was about accepting the place where you are and trying to figure out how to get beyond that, but not really knowing how. This one is more like, ‘I know how to do this, so I’m just continuing to go forward, take the good with the bad and keep moving.’"

Also with this album, the group presented itself as a more integrated whole, with the other band members coming more to the foreground. Accordingly, the tracks "Spin" and "Wash," for example, feature guitar chords just as prominently as the vocals, giving the band a more unified sound.

With the help of producer Aniello, Wade dug deeper for more soulful lyrics, while at the same time arriving at them more naturally, improvising lines in pre-production and then picking out the best ones. "It’s all about letting the song happen versus trying to write it," explained Wade on the band’s website. Wade wrote much of the music for Stanley Climbfall while on the road touring with Matchbox Twenty and Pearl Jam. At the end of each show, he would seclude himself in the back of the tour bus and, with the help of a tape recorder, rough out the tunes that would become the songs of the new album.

Wade remarked to the Asia Africa Intelligence Wire, "I think that this is a good, complete record that you can listen to all the way through and all the songs fit together—it makes more sense as a collection of songs [than No Name Face]." In keeping with the theme of taking risks, Stanley Climbfall represents for the band a commitment to continue changing and growing, all the while playing the music that is the most meaningful to them. As Wade put it on the band’s website, "we took a chance and tried to make what we do better."

Biography

Led by singer/songwriter Jason Wade, Lifehouse emerged in the early 2000s with a commercial blend of pop/rock melody and throaty, post-grunge vocals. Wade, who originally tagged the band Blyss upon its inception in 1996, was raised by missionary parents in a variety of locales. He eventually settled in Los Angeles with his mother and took a keen interest in songwriting. Bassist Sergio Andrade lived next door, and the two spent hours in Wade's garage, fine-tuning their original compositions and laying the brickwork for Lifehouse's accessible sound. Those rehearsals paved the way for a self-released album, Diff's Lucky Band, as well as a series of shows at church worship services. Lifehouse resisted the temptation to become a full-fledged Christian band, however, and instead signed a contract with DreamWorks Records as an alternative rock trio. Drummer Jon Palmer completed the lineup.

No Name Face marked the band's official debut in the fall of 2000. The album enjoyed double-platinum sales on the strength of "Hanging by a Moment," which was the most played radio track of 2001. In a market dominated by teen pop, Lifehouse stood out as champions of guitar-based music, and their unexpected success drew them back inside the studio to work on a follow-up album. With Brendan O'Brien handling production duties, Wade led his band through the recording of Stanley Climbfall during the spring and summer of 2002. The record was released on DreamWorks the following September, but it failed to match the sales of its predecessor. Lifehouse's lineup splintered soon after, with Andrade exiting the group to pursue alternate projects.

Wade pieced together a revised Lifehouse and returned in early 2005 with a self-titled third album. For the touring that followed its release, Wade and percussionist Rick Woolstenhulme were joined by former AM Radio bassist/vocalist Bryce Soderberg, who remained with the group for its return to alternative rock on 2007's Who We Are. Lifehouse and Who We Are proved to be fairly popular releases, with both albums going gold thanks to a trio of Top 40 singles: "First Time," "You and Me," and "Whatever It Takes." Smoke & Mirrors appeared three years later, sporting a collaboration with rapper/songwriter Kevin Rudolf on the leadoff single "Halfway Gone." ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi

History

2000–02: No Name Face

In 2000, Lifehouse entered the recording studio to record their first major label release. Five of the twelve tracks from previous demo Diff's Lucky Day were remixed and released on No Name Face. Because of frontman Jason Wade's charisma and talent, DreamWorks Records focused their sights solely on him, and by the time the debut album was released on October 31, 2000, Wade and Andrade were the only remaining founding members. Shortly after recording the first album, Rick Woolstenhulme, Jr. replaced Jon Palmer on drums.

"Hanging by a Moment" became Lifehouse's first commercial single. A song that Jason Wade wrote on the spur of the moment launched the band in musical history and became the "Most Played Song of 2001". "Hanging by a Moment" was only the third song in chart history, after Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs' "Wooly Bully" in 1965 and Faith Hill's "Breathe" in 2000, to be named the number one song of the year on the Billboard Hot 100 without having reached No. 1 on any weekly Hot 100 survey. The second single from No Name Face was "Sick Cycle Carousel". It did not have as much success as "Hanging by a Moment", topping out at #35 on the modern rock chart. The third and final single was "Breathing".

The song "Everything" was also used in both the pilot and first-season finale episodes of the future hit WB drama, Smallville, and would go on to be placed on the series' first soundtrack (Smallville: The Talon Mix). This began the long-standing affair between the band and the series, as Lifehouse would go on to have seven songs played during the series' first four seasons, ending with a live performance in the fourth-season prom episode, and landing yet another song on Smallville: The Metropolis Mix ("You and Me (Wedding Version)").The song "Everything" was also used in the series' 200th episode, titled "Homecoming" in the show's 10th and final season. The song Somewhere in Between from the album No Name Face features in the first season episode "The Blame Game" of Falcon Beach.[1]

2002–05: Stanley Climbfall

Shortly after a long tour for No Name Face, Lifehouse reentered the studio to cut their second album, Stanley Climbfall. The album's initial success was short-lived and its singles, "Spin" and "Take Me Away", were vastly overshadowed by the success of the first album. Shortly after the album debuted, Rick's brother Sean Woolstenhulme (of The Calling) officially became the fourth member of the band in June 2002. He had previously toured with Lifehouse.

In April 2004, Sergio Andrade confirmed that he had decided to leave the band to pursue individual projects. Shortly after his departure, Sean also left the band to pursue other musical projects such as Abandoned Pools and The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex.

2005–07: Lifehouse

Jason Wade and Rick Woolstenhulme remained the active members of Lifehouse. In late 2004, Bryce Soderberg (previously of AM Radio) signed on as Lifehouse's new bassist. On July 6, 2004, they went to Maryland to begin work on their eponymous third album. Lifehouse was released on March 22, 2005 and was produced by John Alagia.

The album's first single, "You and Me", was released for airplay on January 18, 2005. It was written several years prior and was originally performed by Jason Wade in the 2000 independent film All Over Again. The song was a success and stayed on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for 62 weeks (the fifth longest-charted in history), peaking at No. 5. The song also appears on the soundtrack to Smallville. One episode, "Spirit", featured the band actually performing it and three other songs from the album ("Come Back Down", "Blind", and "Undone") on the show. The song has also appeared on Cold Case, Boston Legal, Gavin & Stacey, Everwood, Grey's Anatomy, The 4400 and Medium. The song "All In All" was featured in Scrubs.

The music video for the album's second single, "Blind", was released October 19, 2005. It stars Tina Majorino and features several other up-and-coming young actors such as Sarch McClain, Stephen Cheung, Christopher Thien Duc Van and Andy Walters.

In 2006, the song 'Good Enough' was featured in the Disney film 'The Wild' and was repeated over the end credits.

2007–09: Who We Are

Their fourth album, entitled Who We Are, was released on June 19, 2007.[2] The album features Wade, Woolstenhulme and Soderberg as its lineup, and "rocks a little harder" than their previous album, according to the band.[3] The album was recorded in Kiefer Sutherland and Jude Cole's recording studio, Ironworks Studios, in Los Angeles. The album's release was followed by a tour with The Goo Goo Dolls and Colbie Caillat, which began June 15 at the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, AZ,[4] after which the band embarked on a "worldwide headlining tour".

The album's first single was "First Time", released on April 24, 2007. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 48 in May,[5] and peaked at #3 on the Hot Adult Top 40 Charts.

The album's second single, "Whatever It Takes", was released to radio stations on October 29, 2007.[6] The song's music video premiered on Yahoo Music on November 16, 2007.

"Broken", the album's third single,[7] has appeared on several TV series, including Grey's Anatomy ("Lay Your Hands On Me"), Criminal Minds ("In Name and Blood"), One Tree Hill, One Life To Live and The Hills. Most recently, it was featured in the motion picture soundtrack The Time Traveler's Wife. So far, it has peaked at #83 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music video for "Broken" officially debuted on VH1's Top 20 Countdown on September 20, 2008.

The song "Who We Are" was used in an advertisement on A&E to promote their original programming.[citation needed]

Lifehouse held a contest to make a video for the song "Make Me Over".[8] The band gave 60 USC School of Cinematic Arts graduate students a chance to shoot the video for their new single. The winning video premiered at a gala event on December 5, 2008 at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, CA.[9]

As of October 2008, the album had been certified gold.[10]

On April 11, 2009, the band announced that Ben Carey was an official member of the band. They said that they had been "a four piece for some time" and that Ben is "family to us". Ben had been touring with the band since 2004.[11]

2009–2010: Smoke & Mirrors

Lifehouse announced in August 2008 that they would be starting on their fifth album, which was tentatively scheduled for a late 2009 release. The band entered the studio on November 12, 2008 to begin working on the project. They stated in an interview at ESPN Magazine's NEXT Party during Super Bowl XLIII that the album should be released in late 2009.[12] Lifehouse revealed during their 2009 tour that the album would also include the band's previously released single "From Where You Are." It was announced on October 15 that the new album would be called Smoke & Mirrors and would be released on December 8, 2009. However, on November 13, 2009, the band stated on its web page that it would now be released on February 2, 2010.[13] The first single was "Halfway Gone," which was released on October 27, 2009. The music video premiered on the VH1 Top 20 on VH1.com at the end of November.[14] The album was released in a standard, deluxe, and two-disc deluxe edition. On December 22, Tommy2.net reported that the album had been pushed back once again, this time to February 23, 2010.[15] The album was then delayed again, but was released on March 2, 2010.

The album debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200 with 54,203 sold. This marked the highest chart debut of their ten year career, beating out first week chart position for their 2002 sophomore set Stanley Climbfall, which debuted at #7.[16]

2011–present: Sixth Studio Album

In August 2011, Lifehouse announced on their official Facebook page that they were back in the studio working on their sixth studio album. [17]

Other songs

Shortly after the death of George Harrison, the band performed an acoustic rendition of "Something" on Last Call With Carson Daly. The band has also covered the Keane single "Somewhere Only We Know" live on Yahoo Music. The group also stated that Keane's album was their favorite album of 2007. In 2007, the band did a cover of The Rolling Stones' "Beast of Burden" for the Stripped Music Sessions. The band says that they wanted to "pay homage to the godfathers of rock".[18]

Jason Wade wrote the song, "From Where You Are" for Allstate's Teen Driving Program. The song was featured on the "Tall Lights" commercial and aired on NBC.[19]
