Purpose

To test the integrity of knee ligaments.

How it works

The test isolates and compares the normal joint to the abnormal joint.

Preparation

You lie on an examining table and remain totally relaxed.

Test procedure

You are strapped onto a machine called a ligament tester that applies stress to the knees by moving them back and forth.

After the test

You may return to normal activities.

Factors affecting results
  • Not relaxing.
  • Pain that makes the test too uncomfortable.
Interpretation

A doctor examines the results printed on a graph and compares them to normal results.

Advantages
  • The test accurately documents physical strength of the knee and ligaments, and injury to the cruciate ligaments of the knee.
  • It provides quantitative numbers to use for documentation (as required for workmen's compensation.
The next step

Exercises are prescribed to strengthen knee ligaments. No other tests are required.
