light at the end of the tunnel

US Military Dictionary: light at the end of the tunnel

Part of a phrase uttered by U.S. National Security Adviser Walt W. Rostow in December 1967, in regard to the Vietnam War. The entire phrase was “I see light at the end of the tunnel, ” which was an attempt to reassure the American public that victory was at hand, despite years of fighting and heavy casualties.
