NICE: The best places to sample socca in Nice (and you should at least try some) are the stalls and snack bars that make them fresh along most of the markets. These pancakes, made of chick pea flour fried in olive oil, are rich and can be a bit heavy. A little goes a long way. Everyone who likes socca has a favorite stand on a special streetcorner where they buy it. Ask at your hotel or among the market traders for a recommendation.
ÈZE BORD DE MER: The beach bar and restaurant La Cigale serves pizza and ice cream (06360 Eze sur Mer, ☎ 33 04 93 01 58 87, open for lunch from spring through fall and evenings in July and August). Toy with a drink here while you watch the passing scene and celebrity-spot. There aren’t many pizza joints that will organize a wedding on the beach for you but that’s the kind of place Èze is.
Up in Èze Village, the aptly named Le Nid d’Aigle (The Eagle’s Nest) serves afternoon snacks and traditional family-style cooking on a terrace in the sky (1 Rue du Château, 06360 Èze, ☎/fax 33 04 93 41 19 08, closed Tuesdays and Wednesday night, €).
Le Cactus is another place to refresh yourself from climbing up to Èze, with crêpes, salads and ice creams. It’s at the entrance to the old town (La Placette, Èze Village, ☎ 33 04 93 41 19 02).
BIOT has a particularly nice salon de thé, Le Mas des Orangers (3 Rue des Roses, 06410 Biot, ☎/fax 33 04 93 65 18 10, sylvie.rekkas@libertysurf.fr, www.lemasdesorangers.com) where you can take a break from all your hot shopping in the glass studios. They offer splendid patisserie, light salad lunches, fruit juices, gourmet teas, local beer, oddly enough, olive oil, gourmet treats and house wares for sale.
