Shanghai Metro Line 5, also known as the Xinmin Line, was opened on November 25, 2003 as the fourth line of the Shanghai Metro to open. Along with the other "light railway" line, Line 6, it is run by Shanghai Modern Rail Transit Co. Ltd.
The line connects the southernmost station of Line 1, Xinzhuang with the Minhang Development Zone in Minhang, a satellite city of Shanghai.
Future Expansion
South Extension
A branch line from the north side of Dongchuan Road will go straight at Humin Road, and cross the Huangpu River by Minpu 2nd Bridge to Fengxian District, 1st phase is from Dongchuan Road to Nanqiao Xincheng, will cosntruction between 2010 to 2020, 2nd Phase will south to Haiwan, no timetable given.
North Part
The North Part of this line connects Xinzhuang and Hongqiao Railway Station and its length is 14.3 km. This line will have 11 stations. As this line is treated as a new line instead of an extension line, it may be named as the South Part of Line 17 when it enters operation[1].
This line can change to Lines 1, 2, 5, 9, 10, 12, 17 and 20.
