Line 8, also known as the Yangpu Line, is a metro line that runs north-south on the Shanghai Metro network, from Shiguang Road, in Yangpu District to Aerospace Museum, in Minhang. There are also future plans for the line to be extended to Luhui in Minhang District. This subway line was built to alleviate the traffic congestion from Yangpu District to the downtown core of Shanghai. The line is extremely crowded during peak hours.
Introduction
The subway line's first phase, which opened on December 29, 2007, runs between Shiguang Road and Yaohua Road, excluding Zhoujiadu station. Trial operation began for the first phase of this line on September 16. Even though this is a subway line, trains used for light rail lines consisting of six cars are being used throughout the line. The trains are manufactured by Shanghai Electric and Alstom.
The second phase, from Yaohua Road to Aerospace Museum, excluding Jiyang Road, began its trial runs on July 5, 2009. Also, Jiyang Road is planned to open in end of the 2009, allowing passengers to interchange with Line 6, while Zhoujiadu station is planned to open in 2010.
Interchanges
- Hongkou Stadium - At this virtual interchange station, passengers can transfer to Line 3, but they must exit and re-enter the station, as the interchange has not been built yet. The difficulty with this interchange is that Line 3 is located above ground, while Line 8 is entirely underground. Also, the Line 3 station has no barrier-free ground access (all stairs due to non-functioning escalators from ground level to the station), preventing transfers by the disabled without assistance.
- People's Square - Passengers can interchange to Line 1 and Line 2 at this stop. This is also a very important station, as it is located at a major financial district as well as near many tourist attractions.
- South Xizang Road - Passengers can interchange to Line 4 at this stop.
