Flows of inputs and outputs to and from a manufacturing plant in association with other plants. Movements of matter are material linkages as opposed to machinery and service linkages such as information, advice, and maintenance. Individual plants are also tied together by forward linkages—supplying customers—and backward linkages with their suppliers. Horizontal linkages occur between plants which are engaged in similar stages of a manufacturing process.
