Lisa Goldstein

Goldstein, Lisa (1953– ), American writer, who won the American Book Award for The Red Magician (1982), a novel with the homespun flavour of Jewish folk tales, set in a magical version of Eastern Europe prior to World War II. Strange Devices of the Sun and Moon (1993) is a delightfully quirky novel based on the ‘changeling’ motif, involving fairies and Christopher Marlowe in 16th‐century London. Goldstein also works with folklore themes in two short stories: ‘Breadcrumbs and Stones’ (1993), a powerful look at ‘Hansel and Gretel’ as seen through the memories of a Holocaust survivor; and ‘Brother Bear’ (1995), inspired by ‘Goldilocks’ and the Native American legend ‘The Girl who Married a Bear’.
