This is a list of the first-level administrative divisions of the People's Republic of China (P.R.C.), including all provinces, autonomous regions, special administrative regions and municipalities, in order of their officially reported illiteracy rate for people aged 15 and above in 2004.

Taiwan province, which is factually under the jurisdiction of the Republic of China (R.O.C.) on Taiwan, is given for comparison purposes.

The figures are from the 2005 Yearbook published by the Bureau of Statistics of the PRC. The Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan figures are 2005 figures from the CIA World Factbook.
