Ben Tennyson / Ben 10

Portrayed By:

Benjamin "Ben" Tennyson, also known as Ben 10, is the main protagonist of the series. He is a typical ten-year-old boy—he plays video games, rides his skateboard, and often gets into mischief. However, his life changes when the Omnitrix latches onto his wrist. Unable to remove it, he uses its powers to become a hero. However, he finds the job trickier than he imagined, especially with the evil alien warlord Vilgax pursuing him relentlessly to retrieve the Omnitrix.

Original series

Ben is something of a glory hog, sometimes taking credit that he does not deserve.[1] He also tends to be a sore loser, especially when it is Gwen - with whom he shares a love-hate relationship - who outdoes him. Ben is not above using the Omnitrix to pull pranks, even during urgent situations.[2] In spite of all this, Ben is good-hearted and will stop at nothing to protect his family or anyone in danger. Even when not in alien form, Ben's resourcefulness has saved himself and others from many a dire situation, especially when the Omnitrix cannot activate or does not provide him with the form he originally wants. Ben also suffered from a fear of clowns until the episode "Last Laugh". It is also mentioned several times that Ben has poor hygiene.

Ben's relationship with Gwen in the original series is complex. The two of them bicker almost constantly, can hardly agree with each other on anything (the only exception being their dislike of Max's bizarre cooking), and their fights have, on occasion, even led to physical confrontations. Despite all of this, they truly care about each other, showing genuine concern when the other is in serious danger. A prominent example is in Ben 10: Secret of the Omnitrix, when Ben is deeply saddened when it is thought that Gwen had died, and hugged her while in tears when it is revealed that she had survived.

Ben 10: Alien Force

In the sequel series, Ben 10: Alien Force, Ben (now voiced by Yuri Lowenthal) is 15-years-old and much more mature, resourceful and responsible character, having learned the value of teamwork through his role as a goalkeeper for his soccer team, and at the same time growing out of his childish antics. He now sports a black shirt, a green jacket with a white vertical line with the number 10 on it, while his soccer uniform resembles his original clothing (incidentally, his jersey number is also 10), blue jeans, and black Converse low-tops.

Ben found a way to remove the Omnitrix roughly five years before the series began, allowing him to live a normal life. When Grandpa Max goes missing, he teams up with Gwen and a reformed Kevin to find him. Ben is now far more adept at using the Omnitrix, actually thinking about which alien would be most effective against an opponent or the most appropriate for a situation, rather than simply selecting the one with the most physical power as he originally did. The fact that the new Omnitrix does not malfunction as it once did helps. Ben has repeatedly shown to be quick to judge and/or trust others; for example, in "All That Glitters", he quickly inducts Mike Morningstar into their group and refuses to believe that he may be a life-sucking criminal until it was almost too late. His relationship with Gwen is also better; they get along much better and are no longer openly hostile towards one another.

When Ben puts the Omnitrix back on, it recalibrates, giving him access to a new set of alien forms; in addition, it reconfigures into a more watch-like shape with a new symbol (resembling that of a Plumber's badge) and gains additional abilities, such as repairing genetic damage. It also carries a new weakness: if Ben's aliens are hurt, Ben himself retains the injuries when he reverts to human form, though this has not proven to be any significant problem so far. Contrary to the Omnitrix's previous ill-timed deactivations, the new Omnitrix seems to remain active as long as it needs to. Ben changes back to human form at will, and can transform to another alien within an instant. However, its power will eventually deplete and requires time to recharge. Ben has also learned martial arts from Gwen in order to minimize his reliance on the Omnitrix.

In 'Alien Force', it is noteworthy that Ben has become quite famous for his reputation in the alien underground, the fish-like alien Plumber Magister Labrid referring to him as "the legendary Ben Tennyson", and Mike Morningstar mentioning that he is a big fan of Ben's, and surprised to see him after his five-year disappearance.

After ending the conflict with the Highbreed, Ben receives numerous medals from various alien species as a reward. Over time, Ben's status as an interstellar celebrity goes to his head, and he begins to show many of the negative traits that were prominent in the original series: cocky, arrogant, egotistical, and overconfident with himself and constantly bragging that he single-handedly saved the entire universe, which irritates both Gwen and Kevin. In the third season premiere episode "The Vengeance of Vilgax" his arrogance eventually leads him to try to hack the Omnitrix to re-unlock the master control despite Azmuth warning him not to, resulting in Chromastone, Way Big, Spidermonkey, and Goop escaping the Omnitrix and Kevin permanently transforming into a being with a segmented body composed of several different substances. He manages to recapture them in time to face the returning Vilgax in a battle for the fate of the Earth (although he does not use those aliens in the actual fight). In the ensuing battle, Vilgax shatters Chromastone but the Omnitrix reforms him into Diamondhead, which Ben uses to defeat Vilgax. In later episodes, his cockiness was toned down, though it still manifests itself more than in the two previous seasons from time to time.

Love Interests

  • Kai Green voiced by (Bettina Bush) is a girl of Navajo descent and the granddaughter of Wes Green, a former Plumber and a long time friend of Max Tennyson. She first appears in the episode "Ben Wolf" where Ben catches a glimpse of her dancing and is immediately smitten. At the end of the episode, Ben attempts to establish a relationsip with her but is immediately rebuffed when he learns that he is just isn't her "type". She was seen again in "Perfect Day" in an illusion created by the Forever Knights.
  • Julie Yamamoto (Voiced by Vyvan Pham), a Japanese student & teenage tennis player who is currently Ben's love interest. She first appears in the pilot episode of Ben 10: Alien Force as a crowd attendant to Ben's soccer match. At the end of "War of the Worlds", Ben and Julie get close to kissing, but decide against it as Gwen, Kevin, and Max were all looking on. Ben then tells her that he will walk her to school the next day, and Julie gets home by riding Ship.
  • Elena Validus is one of the Plumber kids and a former member of Ben's soccer team she is mentioned by Gwen as Ben's first crush (though this contradicts what was seen in the original series as Ben met Elena when he was thirteen[3] while he met Kai when he was ten). Ben had to convince his soccer team mates to let her join. She appears in the live-action film, Ben 10: Alien Swarm. She may or may not appear in Ben 10: Evolution.

Gwen Tennyson

Portrayed By:

Gwendolyn "Gwen" Tennyson is Ben's 10 year-old cousin (the two share the same birthday).[4]

Original series

In the original series, Gwen shares a love-hate relationship with Ben, insulting him with dry wit and sarcasm most of the time, in part due to their shared birthday.[5] She uses her laptop to research any strange people and/or creatures they might come across,[6] and is a capable gymnast and has had some training in martial arts.[7] She has also shown an almost innate skill in using various complicated devices or objects, such as in the "What If?" episode "Gwen 10", when Gwen gained the Omnitrix instead of Ben and proved to be far more adept in its use than he initially was.

Overall, her most notable skill is her innate, if latent, ability at magic. Having within her what Charmcaster calls a "magical aura", Gwen is capable of using various magical artifacts and spells.[8] When using the magical, luck-giving Charm of Bezel, she was able to activate it instinctively, whereas Hex did or could not.[9] Later on, when she takes and uses his staff, she was able to make it fire an energy blast—according to Charmcaster, only someone of Hex's skill should have that ability.[10] Gwen starts tapping into her magical powers when she procures a book of spells from Charmcaster in the episode "A Change of Face".[11]

On two occasions, Gwen has the Charms of Bezel to become a superhero by the name of Lucky Girl. At first, her ability drew from the "luck" Charm of Bezel, which innately gave her perfect luck. While wearing the charm, any action she took would result in a Rube Goldberg-style chain reaction benefiting her original intent, but usually injuring Ben in the process.[9] She later brought back her superhero identity after obtaining the Keystone of Bezel, which increased her natural abilities to superhuman levels rather than just affecting her luck.[10] Both times, Gwen was forced to retire when the Charms of Bezel were destroyed.

Ben 10: Alien Force

In the sequel series, Ben 10: Alien Force, Gwen has grown into a calm and collective teenager, and she and Ben get along much better and are no longer openly hostile towards one another. In this version, Gwen wears a plain, white shirt, loosely-buttoned blue sweater, a black skirt with black tights, her hair is much longer and darker, her eyes are much darker, and her lips are more visible. Gwen is now a black belt (taking classes in Tae Kwon Do, according to dialogue in "Simple"), but tends to favor using her powers. She is able to create energy constructs for nearly any purpose, usually creating platforms to levitate herself (and others), beams to grab enemies, circular blasts to knock enemies back, projecting beams from her eyes that seem to simulate heat vision, and opening up interdimensional portals. She also has a wide range of other loosely defined supernatural abilities, such as dowsing, limited telepathy, and clairvoyance. Her powers are revealed to be alien in origin; her grandmother, Verdona, is an energy being known as an Anodite and surprisingly she is the only descendant of hers who inherited Verdona's powers. Verdona tells Gwen that what she and others originally thought of as "magic" was actually the manipulation of mana, a substance of magic - making Anodites a magic-wielding race. Verdona offers to take Gwen to her home planet and train her in the mystical ways of the Anodites, but Gwen prefers to remain on Earth with Ben and Kevin. She hates being called an "energy being", referring to her Anodite heritage. In the episode "In Charm's Way", it's implied that humans like Charmcaster can also be trained to utilize mana, thus explaining their powers.

In the episode "Unearthed", an alien creature is able to see her as an Anodite, in which she looks exactly like her grandmother's true form, but slightly shorter. In "War of the Worlds", when Kevin was threatened by a Highbreed commander, she assumes her Anodite form for the first time and easily defeated the commander. She was almost overwhelmed by her own power before Kevin snaps her out of it.

During the course of the series she has developed a romantic relationship with Kevin. They have also been shown to have arguments, usually starting with Gwen always trying to force Kevin to "ask her out" and him always answering "don't push me". In the episode, "Fool's Gold" Kevin appears to be avoiding her because he is ashamed of his recent mutation due to accidentally absorbing a massive feedback pulse as a result of trying to hack the Omnitrix. He gives her a locket of he and Gwen when he was in human form, asking her to remember him as he was. Gwen says she doesn't care what he looks like, and he replies "But I do."

In the season three premiere, Gwen has altered her wardrobe, gaining a red shirt, a black vest with gray pants, and a ponytail. Ben and Gwen seem to have revived their infamous rivalry from the original series, in part due to Ben's cockiness and inflated ego; in the third season, Gwen pours a smoothie over Ben's head, and he nearly returns the favor. Despite their rivalry, they both still have a strong bond, visible in In Charm's Way, when Ben defends Gwen and informs Kevin that she has been spending all of her spare time in order to find a cure for Kevin's condition. It is shown in both "Vengeance of Vilgax" and "Inferno", respectively, that Gwen suffers from both arachnophobia and claustrophobia. It is also noted that Gwen still uses her old spell book from the original series, thus allowing her to have a wider range of of abilities, such as creating whirlwinds.

Max Tennyson

Portrayed By:

  • Paul Eiding - Ben 10, Ben 10: Alien Force, Ben 10: Evolutions (voice-only)
  • Lee Majors - Ben 10: Race Against Time (live action)
  • Barry Corbin - Ben 10: Alien Swarm (live action)

Original series

Maxwell "Max" Tennyson or Grandpa Max as his grandchildren call him, is the 60-year old, rather overweight and a bit slow at times, paternal grandfather of the cousins Ben and Gwen Tennyson. Despite his age, Max has shown on multiple occasions to be highly athletic and a formidable fighter. Max was once in the Army, had been in the astronaut program, and was a "plumber" (see next paragraph) and has been through his share of scrapes; he takes his grandson gaining superpowers in stride and supports Ben in any way he can. Ben and Gwen were ignorant of this at first, believing him to have been a literal plumber. They began questioning this after several incidents in which he displayed knowledge and skills that a plumber would not normally have; everything from military-style hand signals[6] to a working knowledge of nuclear reactors.[2] Throughout the first season, it seems that Max knows far more about aliens than he lets on, which climaxes in the season finale, where it is revealed that he and Vilgax are old enemies, with Vilgax even going so far as to call Max "a thorn in his side."

In reality, Max was indeed a plumber, but not the kind that Ben and Gwen thought he was. He was part of an interstellar policing organization called "The Plumbers" which dealt with extraterrestrial, paranormal, and other situations that many others could not handle.[12] Their base was beneath Mount Rushmore.[13] The group was disbanded shortly after Max defeated Vilgax for the first time, suggesting that Vilgax had been largely responsible for the various incidents they dealt with.[12] Max was to have been among the candidates eligible for the Apollo 11 mission, and would have gone were it not for other concerns.[1]

By the age of 80, Max has further modified his RV, grown a beard, and lost his right arm in the Limax Wars of 2017. In its place, he uses a neuroprosthetic replica of his arm, which can also extend and transform into a selection of futuristic weapons. Further in the future (now 92), around when his great-grandson Ken is 10, Max has lost his beard and much of his weight and height, which was explained as being due to his age and a steady diet of futuristic health food; in this future, his cybernetic arm appears far more mechanical, as opposed to before, when it appeared to be an exact replica of his original arm.

Max is an old friend of an alien named Xylene. Xylene, like all the other three eyed aliens of her planet, she has the ability of telekinesis. She had intended to send the Omnitrix to Max, but Ben found it by accident.[14] Max and Xylene seem to have been romantically involved and work well as a team. Xylene tries to convince Max to form a partnership and travel across the galaxy with her, but Max eventually turns her down twice: the first time due to his duties as a Plumber, and the second time due to his need to look after the kids.[14]

Ben 10 : Alien Force

In Ben 10: Alien Force, Max looks mostly the same as before, save for a couple of minor wrinkles and whiter hair. He engages in a solo investigation of the Highbreed, disrupting their activities whenever possible. In "Ben 10 Returns", Ben finds a holodisc containing a message from Max, claiming that he is looking into renewed alien activity on Earth and Ben need not worry; he also claims that he has the Omnitrix, and the image of a DNAlien flickers at the end of the message, indicating that the message was a deception. In "Kevin's Big Score", Kevin tracks down another holodisc containing a cryptic message from Grandpa Max, which advises Ben to form a team to fight the alien threat, recommending that he track down other child Plumbers. He appears in person in "Max Out", where he infiltrates a Highbreed factory mass-producing DNAliens to rescue Ken Tennyson, Gwen's older brother. He is reunited with Ben and Gwen, but they are separated when Max uses a Null Void Projector (minus the focusing lens) as a hand grenade to destroy the Highbreed factory, and is presumed dead. As revealed in "Voided", the blast had sent Max to the Null Void; though he initially intended to return to Earth, he ultimately organized a resistance against Dr. Animo (now calling himself "D'Void") with the help of Helen, Manny, and Pierce. After D'Void is stopped, Max remains behind to set things right in the Null Void, but promises to return when all of his obligations in there are done. He ultimately returns from the Null Void to help Ben stop the Highbreed invasion. After the war was over, he becomes a mentor to the other Plumber kids. Seeing how far Ben has come, he said Ben doesn't need him anymore, but Ben replies that he always will need him.

In the Season Three Premier, Max learns of the coming of Vilgax as he takes the Plumber's Helpers to train. He tells them that this is no longer a training mission, and that this is for real. When he takes them to the battle area of Vilgax, they are all defeated, and Max subsequently calls Ben to inform him of Vilgax's return. He ultimately decides that Vilgax is Plumber's business and that he will fight Vilgax in Ben's place, but Ben refuses to let him do so, insisting that Vilgax is his concern. During the fight, Max hacks into the satellites broadcasting the fight, preventing Ben's true identity from being revealed to the world. His Rustbucket RV has been recovered and tricked out with alien technology, just like in the original Ben 10 series. Max's Plumber suit has also been redesigned to appear more metallic, similar to the alien Plumbers Magister Labrid and Magister Ghilil.

It was also revealed during the course of Alien Force that Max married an alien energy being called an Anodite, named Verdona, who is Ben and Gwen's grandmother. It appears the two may have split up at some point since then, as Max showed no problems in showing romantic feelings towards another alien named Xylene that appeared previously. It is possible, based on what Max says in "Race Against Time" ("I shielded your father from it, your grandmother before she passed") that he believed that Verdona died at some point, allowing him a romance with Xylene.

In "Inferno", it's revealed that Max now serves as mission control, rerouting anything worth investigating to Ben, Gwen, and Kevin. He also explains that many of the mythological creatures on Earth actually do exist and they are aliens, but states that Bigfoot is just a guy in a suit. In the episode "If All Else Fails", Max is revealed to have been infected with a dormant Highbreed doomsday weapon, presumably during his brief captivity in "Max Out", along with dozens of other people during the invasion. He is mentally controlled to be the brain of the failsafe weapon, but Ben manages to sever him from the weapon using Swampfire. It is also revealed in the same episode that Max once knew Kevin's father during their Plumber days and enjoyed telling stories of them on the front line.

Kevin Levin / Kevin 11

Portrayed By

Kevin Ethan Levin is an 11-year-old mutant with the ability to absorb any type of energy and release it at will. Although, he seems only able to release electricity initially, in Alien Force, he was able to absorb matter. The energy can be used to activate or overload various machines and can also be used to make energy blasts; however, it will gradually deplete overtime or through excess use, requiring Kevin to recharge every now and then from a reliable power source (such as streetlamps). Dwayne McDuffie, one of the Alien Force writers, has confirmed that Kevin is, in fact, half human and half alien, an Osmosian (play on osmosis) to be precise.[citation needed] It is unknown which one of his parents was an alien. Kevin ran away from home before the start of the series due to his falling out with his parents.

He eventually settled in the subways of New York, and has been alienated ever since; this has led to him developing anti-social behavior disorders that border on sociopathy. However, he is reformed over the course of Ben 10 Alien Force, and rejoins society and apparently reconciles with his family. This could be due to the fact that, as he matured, he came to think about and regret all the wrong that he had done in the past, as he stated in "Kevin's Big Score", "I've done a lot of things I'm not proud of". When absorbing energy from the Omnitrix's aliens, he becomes an incomplete, but effective, version of that alien.

Original series

In his first appearance in "Kevin 11", he is first encountered by Ben in an arcade, where he was assaulted by bullies and saved by Ben as XLR8. The two attempt to steal video games from a warehouse and got caught by the police, forcing Ben to reveal his powers to him in order to escape. The two then become partners, planning to use their powers to get whatever they want. However, when Kevin rigs two trains to collide for the two to steal any valuables on-board, uncaring that the crash would most likely result in the deaths of several hundred people, Ben has a crisis of conscience, ultimately realizing just how deranged Kevin truly is and breaking off their partnership.

Kevin then absorbed the abilities of Heatblast and Fourarms, using the former form's powers to get revenge on those who had wronged him. He absorbed the latter form's powers during his second battle with Ben to even the odds. After being defeated by Ben, Ben offers for Kevin to join them but Kevin takes advantage by trying to take the Omnitrix from Ben; however, the Omnitrix emitted a feedback pulse to prevent Kevin from taking it, seemingly neutralizing his power. Kevin, however, exhibits the ability to create flame at the end of the episode.

Kevin serves as the main antagonist of the second season. His ability to project heat at the end of "Kevin 11" is a result of the Omnitrix's feedback pulse: the amount of energy it emitted allowed him to fully absorb its powers, giving him access to every alien form Ben had at the time. However, because Kevin's ability to regulate this power is poorer than that of the Omnitrix itself, the energy suppresses his human form and forces him to remain as an alien most of the time. As revealed in "Framed", Kevin blamed Ben for this, so he used the powers of the Omnitrix to start a crime spree in San Francisco, both for his own benefit and to damage Ben's (or rather, his alien forms') reputation. Eventually, Kevin's ability to regulate the power fails altogether, causing him to permanently mutate into what Vilgax would describe as a "misshapen, chaotic amalgam of creatures from the Omnitrix."[15]

After his mutation, Kevin gloats that he has all of Ben's powers plus his own, making him "Kevin 11" (the name Kevin is credited under in the ending sequence of the show). Despite Kevin's claim, Ben notes that Kevin's powers are only one-tenth as strong,[16] (although this assessment may not be accurate) and Kevin never exhibits his original powers in this form (the same is true for Ghostfreak, Grey Matter or Upgrade). Kevin's form also limits his ability to use the special powers of his alien forms. Being a random fusion of aliens, Kevin only has access to the powers most prevalent in his form. In addition to these limitations, Kevin seems unable to use the powers of any aliens Ben has gained since their original encounter and was at a deficient disadvantage when he faced Cannonbolt. However, when Kevin and Vilgax have a brief battle in "Back With a Vengeance", Kevin is capable of holding his own against Vilgax, who Ben was never actually able to defeat alone.

During his third appearance in "Grudge Match", Kevin attacks Ben to get revenge, blaming his condition on Ben. As the two battle, they are abducted and forced to fight in Slix Vigma's gladiator games. During their battles, Ben helps Kevin to realize the advantages of his mutated form. Because Kevin 11 is an amalgam of aliens, he can mix and match their powers to make up for their reduced potency. Although forced to work together, Kevin's only goal was killing Ben. At the end of the episode, he manages to take control of Slix Vigma's mother ship.

Kevin returns in the episode "Back With a Vengeance", where he teams up with Vilgax to defeat Ben, and eventually manages to remove the Omnitrix. However, he betrays Vilgax later in an attempt to leave both in the Null Void and use the Omnitrix to take over the world, only for Ben to escape and leave him and Vilgax trapped instead.

In the episode "Ken 10", set in a possible future, Kevin returns after at least thirty years of imprisonment in the Null Void, having been set free by his son, Devlin Levin. Devlin was born after one of these escapes in which Kevin fled to a colony on Saturn, where he started a family before being captured again. Kevin has now fully mastered his powers due to years of absorbing the powers and abilities of the various aliens Ben captured and released into the Null Void. he can also return to his human form now. In his human form, he can also utilize the powers he has absorbed to a limited extent, such as XLR8's speed, without having to transform into that alien, and is able to simply shrug off an intense beating from Way Big. His mutated form, though still an amalgam, has changed considerably from his continued absorption of alien DNA, leading to his new title of "Kevin 11,000". Eager for revenge and having not so much as a care for his son, despite Devlin's role in releasing him, Kevin proceeds to beat on Ben and his son, Ken. Ironically, it is Devlin who stops him, trapping his father back in the Null Void.

Since Kevin is reformed in Ben 10: Alien Force, it would be assumed that the future has changed.

In the video game Ben 10: Protector of Earth, Kevin is a mini-boss Ben fights at the end of Lumber Mill. He reappears when a Null Void portal is opened up and frees him. While Ben deals with several monsters also unleashed as a result, Kevin kidnaps Max and takes him to the Lumber Mill. Once beaten, Kevin is sucked back into the Null Void.

Ben 10: Alien Force

Kevin returns in Ben 10: Alien Force as an ally of Ben and Gwen. Though he is mostly reformed, Kevin still engages in less-than-savory activities occasionally: in "Ben 10 Returns" and "Plumber's Helpers", he is not above stealing treasure and Plumbers' equipment from the Forever Knights and the Plumber's Helpers, respectively, when the opportunity presents itself; in "Kevin's Big Score", he steals the Rust Bucket in order to sell it to Vulkanus; and in "Simple", he helps Argit to sell weapons to both sides of a warring race. Kevin's powers operate differently from the way they did in the original series. He has returned to his normal human form, due to the fact that as he grew older, his human DNA began to gradually restore itself. His absorbing abilities now allow him to absorb the properties of matter as opposed to draining energy. This allows Kevin to cover himself and others with a layer of any solid substance he is touching, similar to Marvel's Absorbing Man or Kamal), which also grants him some level of superhuman strength (Dwayne McDuffie has mentioned that Kevin can still absorb energy, but is afraid to do so. This may be because of what happened when he absorbed Ben's Omnitrix Aliens).[17]

He has a green sports car that resembles a first-generation Dodge Challenger, though the car is from 1976 (as stated by the note from Paradox in season 1 episode 10), and Challengers were not made between 1974 and 1978. He takes care of the car obsessively and it serves as the team's primary mode of transportation. In his spare time, he installed various alien technologies in the vehicle, which proved useful in the final Highbreed war where he was forced to sacrifice it; in the third season, however, the car has been restored. Through the years, Kevin has gained a considerable amount of knowledge about aliens, mostly through his brokering of alien technology to various aliens and the Forever Knights. He also seems to know a lot about humans with an alien heritage, as his guess about Gwen's powers being of alien origin was proven correct.

Commented upon in "The Gauntlet", Kevin, according to JT, is reputed as "the toughest kid in town", indicating that he took up residence in Bellwood at some point prior to the series, although this has never been explicitly stated. It is never mentioned how he could have escaped the Null Void but apparently he was released because he did the time for the crimes he committed. It is worth noting that when Ben first defeated Kevin, he offered Kevin to join their group; a similar thing happened at the beginning of Alien Force, when Ben defeated Kevin as Swampfire and he was once again offered to join them. He joined Ben's team this time.

In "Darkstar Rising", he reveals that his father was also a Plumber. He never met his father, but his mother told Kevin stories about what his father did. This is a big gap in the original series because in Ben 10, he said that his parents both abandoned him because of his strange electrical powers. However, it may have only been an exaggeration on his part, since it is slightly hinted that Kevin's mother remarried. This is due to him saying, "My father, my real father", which resulted in his fallout with them. At the end of the same episode, Kevin, along with Gwen and Ben, become official Plumbers, after which, Kevin leaves to tell his mother about his membership, suggesting that he has now reconciled and rejoined with his family. In Darkstar Rising, when explaining that he wanted to be a Plumber for the sake of being just like his father, it "mostly" served as the reason that he joined the Tennysons in the first place, and subtly suggesting Gwen is the other reason. But it has been hinted by creators that his mother is lying about both his biological and stepfather.[citation needed]

Throughout the Alien Force series, Kevin has developed romantic feelings for Gwen, which has more than once been evidenced. Although, he is very reluctant to openly admit them. Kevin is also concerned that it will never work out between them for obvious (if not too obvious) reasons: his checkered past, his lifestyle, as well as just being the pretty much opposite of her. However, in "War of the Worlds", Kevin demonstrates just how much he really cares about Gwen after she transformed into her Anodite form, by reaching out to her by saying that he doesn't want her to forget him or Ben. Kevin also said that he doesn't want to lose her. They embrace each other afterward. At the end of the episode, Kevin also takes Gwen to an auto show.

In the third season premiere, "Vengeance of Vilgax", Kevin attempts to hack into the Omnitrix and unlock the Master Control in order to give Ben a sporting chance against Vilgax, who is now more powerful than ever. After the first attempt is interrupted by Azmuth, who tells them to no longer tamper with the Omnitrix, Kevin is unwilling to continue but Ben tries it again. The Omnitrix begins to overload, and Kevin stays behind to help Ben free himself from the hacking device; the resulting explosion damages the Omnitrix and frees four of Ben's alien forms from it. In addition, Kevin involuntarily absorbs the brunt of the energy blast and transforms into a creature with a segmented body composed of various different substances. Like his original eleven-year-old self, Kevin is unable to return to his original form, but also gains the ability to transmute his limbs into weapons, similar to DC Comics' Metamorpho. He is still trying to master his new powers because when he used his new powers for the first time he only used it by instinct.

Kevin is very upset at this, (even to the point of allowing Darkstar drain away his powers with a alien artifact restoring his appearance) due to his previous experience as an amalgam of alien forms, feeling he's been turned back into a monster. Shortly afterward, he gives Gwen a locket with a picture of him in his normal state standing beside her, so that she can "Remember me... the way I used to be." Although she tells him she doesn't care what he looks like, he is firm in his self loathing. When in public, Kevin uses an ID mask to disguise his new form.

Although seldom emphasized in the series, Kevin has a slight similarity to Max Tennyson, having first been pointed out by Verdona in the episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?". This is supported by their similar personality traits: stubborn, adventurous and straightforward. Kevin has also worn Max's old tuxedo in "Save the Last Dance", and possesses extensive knowledge about aliens rivaling that of the latter. Kevin's romance with Gwen, who is also of the Anodite heritage, reflecting Max and Verdona's past relationship.

In the video game Ben 10: Alien Force, he, Ben and Gwen help a plumber named Gorvan retrieve dangerous alien technology until they find out that he has been selling the technology to the Highbreed and the Forever Knights. After this, Kevin attempts to catch Gorvan. Ben chases after him, only to find that he has been turned into a DNAlien. The two then face off, and Ben turns Kevin back to normal. He then assists Ben and Gwen to stop the Highbreed's plan to freeze most of the country to make the area habitable for their species.
