Condé Nast Publications is an American magazine publishing company based in New York City, New York.[1] The company was founded in 1909 by Condé Montrose Nast when he acquired Vogue magazine[2] after the death of its founder, Arthur Baldwin Turnure.[3] Businessman Samuel Irving Newhouse, Sr. purchased a controlling interest in the company in 1959 and merged it into his holding company, Advance Publications, owned by the Newhouse family.[4] The company is under the control of Samuel Irving Newhouse, Jr., who is the chief executive officer of Advance Publications and its subsidiaries.[5] Condé Nast has acquired thirteen companies and purchased stakes in three companies. Condé Nast has not released the financial details for most of these mergers and acquisitions.
Condé Nast's first acquisition was Signature Magazine from Citigroup, a financial services company, on December 30, 1987. Condé Nast acquired Knapp Communications on April 20, 1993 for US$175 million. This acquisition was described as a "a perfect fit" with Condé Nast's other magazines, "notably Gourmet, the publishing company's lavish food and travel magazine, and HG, the elegant home decoration publication", because of Knapp's magazines such as Architectural Digest and Bon Appétit.[6] Condé Nast bought Fairchild Publications from its previous owner, The Walt Disney Company, on December 1, 1999, which brought over magazines to Condé Nast that included Details, Women's Wear Daily, and W.[7]
Condé Nast purchased stakes in three companies: Wagadon in 1988, Wired Magazine in 1994, and Ideas Publishing Group in 2001. The company's largest acquisition was Fairchild Publications for $650 million in December 1999. Condé Nast made the most acquisitions in both 2002 and 2006 with two in each year: Modern Bride Group and Ideas Publishing Group in 2002, and Lycos Inc-Wired News and Nutrition Data in 2006.
