A political party is a political organization subscribing to a certain ideology or formed around very special issues with the aim to participate in power, usually by participating in elections.
Comoros does not have a strong party system. Political groups are formed mainly in support of certain leaders. The only major ideological point of contention is the debate between supporters of a strong federal government and supporters of the autonomous island governments.
The parties
At the last elections the candidates were grouped around personalities. Two are more or less parties:
- Convention for the Renewal of the Comoros (Convention pour le Renouveau des Comores, CRC)
- Camp of the Autonomous Islands (Camp des Îles Autonomes)
In the presidential election the Movement for the Comoros (Mouvement pour les Comores), allied with the CRC, participated. In the past the following parties were active.
- Anjouan Popular Movement
- Comoros Party for Democracy and Progress
- Democratic Front
- Forces for Republican Action
- Forum for National Redress
- Movement for Citizens of the Republic
- National Front for Justice
- Movement for Democracy and Progress
- Movement for Socialism and Democracy
- National Rally for Development
