List of Portuguese wine regions

Wikipedia: List of Portuguese wine regions

Portuguese wine regions are grouped into 3 classifications. At the top are the Denominação de Origem Controlada (or DOCs) which correspond roughly to the French Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC), Italian Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC), and Spanish Denominación de Origen (DO) classifications. As of 2005, there were 19 DOCs in Portugal. The second group are considered Indicação de Proveniencia Regulamentada (IPRs) or "DOCs in training". This level is similar to the French Vin Délimité de Qualité Superieure (VDQS) system. As of 2005, there were 29 IPRs. The final group are the Vinho Regional (VRs) which are similar to the French Vin de pays. As of 2005, there were 8 VRs.[1]
