History

Initially, since its Constitution of 22.12.1990, Croatia was a semi-presidential system, which meant the president had broad executive powers, including naming the Prime Minister and dissolving the government. Following the 2000 elections and SDP-led government being formed, the Constitution was amended, which lowered the powers of the president in order to strengthen the functions of the parliament, government and the Prime Minister. This effectively made Croatia a semi-parliamentary system. Thus, the function of the Prime Minister became more powerful then that of the president.
