Selena was a Mexican American singer–songwriter. She wrote the songs "Always Mine", "My Love" and "Amame"[1] and co-wrote "Amor prohibido", "bidi bidi bom bom" and "God's Child (Baila Conmigo)". Her brother, A.B. Quintanilla III was her main songwriter starting in 1989.[2] Selena y Los Dinos band members such as Ricky Vela and Pete Astudillo also wrote some songs for Selena.[2] The songs were on the independent LP records Selena y Los Dinos (1984), Alpha (1986), Muñequito de Trapo (1987), And the Winner Is... (1987), Preciosa (1988) and Dulce Amor (1988). The other songs were on her studio albums, Selena (1989), Ven conmigo (1990), Entre a mi mundo (1992), Selena Live! (1993), Amor prohibido (1994) and Dreaming of You (1995). Selena also recorded several duets with other singers: "Buenos amigos" with Salvadoran singer Alvaro Torres,[3] "Donde quiera que estés" with the Nuyorican band Barrio Boyzz.[4] "God's Child (Baila Conmigo)" with former Talking Heads singer David Byrne,[5] "Puede Ser" with Puerto Rican-Dominican singer Nando "Guero" Dominguez, and several duets with backup dancer Astudillo. "A Boy Like That" was a charity song to help AIDS patients. It was also a cover version of a song from the Broadway musical West Side Story,[6] written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
Selena used polka, jazz fusion and traditional Tejano music into her songs during the 1980s. "My Love" is a freestyle song.[2] Also coming from the album Selena (1989), "No Te Vayas" is a reggae fusion song.[2] Songs in Ven conmigo (1990) had more freestyle and some cumbia music.[2] In Entre a mi mundo (1992) the album had more Tejano songs.[7] "Missing My Baby" is a contemporary R&B song. "¿Qué creias?" is a mariachi song.[7] In Selena Live! (1993) most of the songs were live versions of songs that were released before.[8] There were only three new songs, which were in the style of cumbia.[8] The album Amor prohibido (1994) had mostly cumbia and Latin dance pop songs. "No me queda más" is ballad-ranchera song.[9] "Techno Cumbia" has techno fusion mixed with cumbia. "Ya No" is a rock song.[9] On Dreaming of You (1995), most of the songs were pop confessionals and contemporary R&B songs recorded in English.[10] "Captive Heart" is an electro-pop song, it also had soul. "I'm Getting Used to You" used baroque– and dream pop music. "El toro relajo" and "Tú sólo tú" are ranchera songs.[10]
After Selena was murdered in 1995, several songs were released posthumously. "Siempre hace frio" mixes mariachi and ranchera music. "Only Love" is a pop-confessional.[11] Both of these songs were on Siempre Selena (1996). "Where Did the Feeling Go?" is a power ballad. "Is It the Beat?" is an electronic dance-pop song.[11] The "Disco Medley" is a disco medley of "Last Dance", "The Hustle" and "On The Radio"; these were originally recorded by Donna Summer ("Last Dance", "On the Radio") and Van McCoy ("The Hustle"). The "Cumbia Medley" is a live cumbia medley song that contains "Como la flor", "La carcacha", "Bidi bidi bom bom" and "Baila esta cumbia". These songs were on Selena: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1997).[11] The "Con Tanto Amor Medley" is a ballad medley of "Amor prohibido", "Si una vez" and "Como la flor". It was featured on Ones (2002).[11] "Puede Ser" is a Spanish rock duet, featured on Momentos Intimos (2004).[11] "Lo Dejo Solo" is a polka and was on the Classic Series Vol. 1 album in 2007.[11] Her father Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. and EMI Latin currently hold the rights to more unreleased songs that Selena had recorded.[11]
