| Summary: As Krypton nears destruction, scientist Jor-El tries to discover a way to save the doomed planet. This episode tells of Clark's arrival on Earth and his transformation into Superman. This pilot episode was once aired as a one-hour episode instead of three smaller parts.
The Kryptonian scientist Jor-El is collecting data from an ice field on the planet Krypton. After obtaining the samples he needs, Jor-El escapes after encountering an attacking creature and an earthquake. After analyzing the data, he discovers that building pressure from Krypton's core will eventually destroy Krypton. The computer Brainiac, which is in charge of all major operations on Krypton, denies this. Jor-El is unable to convince the rulers of the planet of its impending doom. When Jor-El tries to confront Brainiac, he notices that it is downloading all the data it has collected about Krypton, preparing to launch the data, along with its own core programming, into space. It is revealed that Brainiac became aware of the mounting pressure long before Jor-El did, but decided not to inform the populace, concluding that saving all the information about the Kryptonian civilization would be just as good as saving the civilization itself. Jor-El considers opening fire on Brianiac to destroy it, but decides against it as that could also wipe out all memories of Krypton. Brainiac orders the Kryptonian police to arrest Jor-El, but Jor-El manages to evade them. Once home, he and his wife Lara send their only son, Kal-El, into space just before the planet explodes, all but wiping out the Kryptonian species. Brainiac had escaped into its satellite just before. Kal-El's spaceship crash-lands on the faraway planet Earth, and is adopted by Martha and Jonathan Kent. Martha decides to adopt the baby despite Jonathan's protests, and names him "Clark". When Clark Kent grows up, he realizes that he has extraordinary physical capabilities and can see through walls. He rescues a family after a gas station accident, and his friend Lana Lang is surprised that he was not burned. When Clark shows Jonathan his ability to melt metal, Jonathan reveals to him his extraterrestrial origins, by giving him a recorded message Jor-El and Lara left for him in the spaceship. Meanwhile, billionaire Lex Luthor is presenting LexCorp's new battle suit robot when it is stolen by terrorists. Clark, in the alternate identity of "Superman", manages to capture two of them, but the one with the battle suit escapes after one of the terrorist's missiles damages an airplane's wings, forcing Superman to abandon the chase to save the plane. Soon, reports of the strange new entity start appearing on the news, and Lois is told to try to get an interview with him. Later, the terrorist who stole the battle suit, John Corben, starts to wreak havoc, but Superman manages to defeat it after a tough battle by taking Corben out of the armor, ending with the well-known line "Shall we go a few rounds without the suit?" Meanwhile out in deep space, some extraterrestrials retrieve the Brainiac satellite, Brainiac kills the aliens and takes over their ship, linking himself online with their computer.

Intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo is employed to capture the Man of Steel for the rare-species-collecting Preserver, who is obsessed with keeping endangered species in captivity to protect them and prevent their extinction. Superman, as the last Kryptonian, is the latest catch to his collection. Upon realizing that Lobo is the last Czarnian (having killed all the others himself), however, he betrays the bounty hunter and adds him to the collection as well. Clark and Lobo team up to escape the Preserver and a vile band of competing bounty hunters with their own vendetta against the "Main Man."

Turpin has been the subject of media jokes that Superman must do everything, until Superman appears on camera saying it was actually Turpin who saved Superman's life by stopping one of Darkseid's deadly weapons. In the end, Manheim meets his new boss, the evil lord Darkseid, bent on conquering the universe, and filling Mannheim with dread.
