There are many ways of categorizing telescopes, and within major classifications, there are usually many variations. One major determining factor is type of light, or particle is being observed. A typical type of telescope, is a commercial, optical, visible wavelength, refractor, on a tripod. Another major type of telescope are large professional reflecting telescopes at visible and near infrared wavelengths, either in space (space telescopes) or on the ground. Some types of telescopes cannot form a image, and other types do not use optics. Solar telescopes are classified by what they look at, the Sun, but includes a variety of types.

Three main types of optical telescopes - and these are divided into subgroups. They all have their different advantages and disadvantages and they are used in different areas of astronomy.
Refractor telescopes (Dioptrics)
- Non-achromatic
- Achromatic telescope
- Apochromatic
- Superachromat
- Varifocal gas-lens telescope
Reflector telescopes (Catoptrics)
- Newtonian telescope
- Gregorian telescope
- Cassegrain telescope
- Large liquid mirror telescope
- Pfund telescope
- Schiefspiegler telescope
- Toroidal reflector / Yolo telescope
- Herrig telescope
- Stevick-Paul telescope
Combined Lens-Mirror Systems (Catadioptrics)

Mounts
Usually optical telescopes are mounted on these different types of mounts.
